Creature
John Saul
--Another great book! Genetic manipulation of a human into something that is animal-like
The God Project
John Saul
--Awesome book about an experimental project done with stolen babies... a very chilling thriller
Hellfire/Unwanted/Sleepwalk
John Saul
--Three great books by JS!! All in one hardcover volume. Definately a steal of a deal..
The Blackstone Chronicles, Book 1: The Doll
John Saul
--The first book in a series of 6 parts by my favorite author about a small town in New England and everything that happens... After you get the first book, make sure you get the rest of them!
The Presense
John Saul
--JS's most recent book, a great piece of speculative fiction that takes place on the island of Maui. Read this one if you have a chance, cuz it is GOOD! =)
Different Seasons
Stephen King
--One of King's best- this book is a collection of four short stories, all of them excellent.
Some of the stories were made into cool movies: Stand by Me and The Shawshank Redemption
Needful Things
Stephen King
--I loved this one too- a must read. Years ago King created the small town of Castle Rock, and in this book he destroys it
The Magic Bullet
Harry Stein
--Excellent medical thriller about finding a cure for cancer.. and the dangers faced along the way. Stein just released a new book called "Infinity's Child" that I gotta get
Caught Inside
Daniel Duane
--Incredibly cool book on surfing and the surfer way of life- very vivid and well written
Sleepers
Lorenzo Carcaterra
--EXCELLENT! Well-written non-fiction book about one boy's childhood growing up in Hell's Kitchen, and the abuse suffered after a childhood prank went wrong. Recently made into the movie of the same title. Highly recommended
A Safe Place
Lorenzo Carcaterra
--True story of a son, a father, and a murder. This book is more or less a biography of Carcaterra's life, and the events preceding Sleepers. Powerfully written- watch for Carcaterra's new novel Apaches this summer.
Catcher in the Rye
J.D. Salinger
--Read it! Classic book that everyone should read just because I say so. Perfect for those of you that are frustrated with day to day life as a human being (all of you non-humans reading this, just ignore).
Children of the Night
Dan Simmons
--Wonderful horror book, with a great scientific explanation for vampires... I recently finished this book, and I was not disappointed- As I read, I often think that Dan Simmon's writing surpasses King...
Summer of Night
Dan Simmons
--Great nostalgic fiction similar to King's "It", but with Simmon's unique style of story telling.
Cemetary of Angels
Noel Hynd
--Great book about a spirit that haunts a family in California
Pet Sematary
Stephen King
--People laugh at me all the time when I tell them I liked this book. It really is a great book, much better than the movie... very frightening.. one of the most horrifying books I have read
You Gotta Have WA
Robert Whiting
--Great book on baseball in Japan. After finishing an eleven page research on the subject, I feel as if I have become an expert. This book is very well written, and it goes way beyond just baseball. Deep, deep sports book.
Swan's Song
Robert McCammon
--Similar to "The Stand", but I liked this book much better.. the end of the world couldn't have been told better than by McCammon- total masterpiece!
Boy's Life
Robert McCammon
--Nostalgic mystery taking place in the early 60's.. very cool and descriptive
Black Lightning
Jurassic Park
The Lost World
A Case of Need
John Saul
--Disturbing book about a serial killer.. one of Saul's recent masterpieces
Michael Crichton
--A really fun read- much better than the movie, and the movie was pretty darn good! In case you were visiting another planet for the last few years, this book is about genetically engineering DINOSAURS! Roar..
Michael Crichton
--Sequal to JP.. coming Memorial Day to a theater near you! Read the book first!
Michael Crichton
--Uhm, Annie loved it lots! Medical suspense in which a doctor is accused of murder, and all sorts of things happen
Catch 22
Four Past Midnight
The Stand (uncut)
The Vampire Chronicles (complete series)
The Witching Hour
The Brothers Karamazov
Crime and Punishment
Flowers for Algernon
A Knight in Shining Armor
Joseph Heller
--
Catch 22 - the most dry, witty, sarcastic, dead-on look at human
nature I have read in a long time. I cracked up at at least one
incident on each page. You have to love a book that cuts down the
military!
Stephen King
--A great book- Out of the four stories, the one that really stands out is The Langoilers. The Langoliers was one of those stories that left me paranoid. I read it in
one night, I couldn't put it down. Unfortunately, I was on my own and it
scared the bloody blazes out of me for some reason.
Stephen King
--The Stand is a book that just reaches into your soul and wraps your life
around its characters. Someone I know has read this book
over 20 times and I can understand why. I never wanted it to end
Anne Rice
--I blame this book, the above two, and the book below for my now habitual action of staying up till
sunrise and sleeping till dusk.
Anne Rice
Fyodor Dostoyersky
--If you are a deep thinker and a bit of a rebel against society, this book and the one below
will feed your deviancy. For some reason I always associate Metallica's
"Nothing Else Matters" with Brothers Karamazov. They go hand in hand for me.
Fyodor Dostoyersky
Daniel Keyes
--Quite possibly the best book I have ever read, this is one of the only books
I read habitually. It absoultey tore my heart out. So did the movie,
"Charlie", which was based on the book. [note from Mad Man Mike: read this book! I loved it too- very touching, masterfully written]
Jude Deveraux
--Yes, I know it's cheesey, but I read this book for the 1st time in 8th grade
and I still read it at least once a year. They need to make a movie out of
it with me and Daniel Day-Lewis in the lead roles!
No Exit (& three other plays)
A Tale of Two Cities
Obedience to Authority
Oleanna
Jean Paul Sartre
--This existentialist play takes place entirely
in hell. It focuses on three people who are forced to spend eternity in
the same room with each other, as they aggravate each other to no end. No
Exit offers a unique interpretation of hell, and is also a sharp
commentary on life in today's world. I've read it three times -- you'll
want to read it more.
Charles Dickens
--Hey, it's tough to read, but the
story is so full of tragedy and poetic plotlines that it would make
Shakespeare proud. It's the classic that everyone ought to read.
Stanley Milgram
--The scariest nonfiction book
I've ever read. It describes and explains the human tendency to follow
orders, no matter how bizarre or sadistic, even when they are free to
disobey them at any time. This book also explains how armies (and even
Hitler's followers) are able to kill indiscriminantly and feel like they
have every justification to do so. Read it -- it kicks ass.
David Mamet
--This short play has inspired countless fistfights
and brawls within audiences who came to see it. The play is driven by the
issue of sexual harassment, but before it is through it deals with the
roles of men and women in today's society, the struggle for power, and it
dwells on greed, humiliation, sexism, violence, control, and morality.
See what all the controversy is about: get Oleanna, it's easily the best
play I've ever read.
