Windows Operating System

Using the Mouse

          Click  Point and press left button and quickly release
                     Click on menu titles (don’t hold down button
                     To cancel, click outside of menu on empty area of desktop

          Double-Click      Point and press left button two times very quickly
                                       This opens windows and starts applications

          Right-Click        Point to an item and click and release right button
                                      This is for some short-cut menu

          Drag                    Point to an item, press and hold down left button and move
                                       to another location and release button. 
                                       (To move items, or resize windows and pictures)

Start Menu

          -  Access to your programs, settings, and most other things you want to do
             with your computer. 

-  This is where you SHUT DOWN your computer when you are finished. 
          -  Start menu is on the TASK BAR.

Windows

          Title bar       Name of the window, maximize, minimize & close buttons
                                You point to this area to drag a window around to move it

          Menu bar    Pull down menus.  Click with mouse on menu titles, or use the
                               keyboard by holding down the ALT key plus the underlined letter

          Scroll bar    Only shows when you can’t see all items in a window.  Use                                mouse to drag the “elevator” up or down 

          Border         Resize the window by dragging the border.  Point to the
                                corner of the window (until you get a double arrow) to resize window.

Working with Windows

       Maximize    Click on the square button in upper right corner of window to
                             enlarge the window

       Restore        After a window is maximized, the maximize button becomes a
                             restore button (two small overlapping squares).  Clicking here
                             restores window to its smaller size

       Minimize     Click on the button with the underline (or minus sign).
                            This shrinks the window and puts it on the task bar.
                            Double click on the button on the task bar to open up the window.
                            (Allows you to easily go back and forth between windows

       Closing        Click on the button with the X in upper right
                            corner (or choose File/Close from menu. 
                             This removes that item from memory.)

       Arrange       Right click on task bar (in a free space, not on a button)                             Choose Tile Horizontally or Vertically or Cascade to
                             see more than one window at a time

       Moving        To move a window around, drag it while the mouse is pointing                              in the Title Bar of the window. 

My Computer Icon

          Double click on C: to see the contents of the hard drive         
          Double click on A: to see the contents of your disk

Format a Disk

          Double click on My Computer icon         
          Click once on Floppy A: (So it is highlighted)
          Pull down FILE menu and choose FORMAT

Windows Explorer

          Start / Programs/ Windows Explorer         
          (On most computers, right click on Start button and choose EXPLORE,
          or hold down SHIFT key and double click on My Computer icon)

          Make sure the toolbar is in view (Choose Toolbar from View menu)         
          Last four buttons on the toolbar change the way the files are displayed

Copy Files

          Drag the icon of the file you want to copy and drop it where you want to put it.

HINT: It is always a good idea  to hold down the RIGHT mouse button when you drag and drop.  It will give you a choice to move, copy or create shortcut.

OR:  Click once on what you want to copy, choose EDIT/COPY , click on where you want to put it and choose EDIT/PASTE  (Or use icons from toolbar)

          You can open two Windows Explorer windows and size them smaller so
          you can see both windows side by side. In one window you can move to the files
          you want to copy, and in the other window you can go to where you want to
          put the files when copied. 
          (Example:  One window shows files on C:, other window files on A:

Delete Files

          Click on the file you want to delete (Highlight it) and press DELETE key         
           It will ask you “Are you sure…?” Click on YES

Rename Files

          In Windows Explorer, highlight the file you want to rename and pull down the          FILE menu and choose RENAME  (Type a new name)

Exit Windows

Click on Start Button                
          Choose Shut Down/ Shut down the Computer/Yes         
          (Only do this when you are going to leave the classroom

Clipboard

Ø     Whenever you cut (Edit/Cut or Ctrl X) or copy (Edit/Copy or Ctrl C) something it is put on the “clipboard” – a temporary holding area.  What is on the clipboard can then be pasted in any program. (Edit/Paste or Ctrl V)

Ø     Printscreen – By pressing the printscreen key you take a “snapshot” of the desktop and that is put in the clipboard, which can later be pasted in any program.  (Edit/Paste or Ctrl V)

Ø     Alt – Printscreen – If you hold down the ALT key when you press the printscreen key, you will take a “snapshot” of the current window (the one where your cursor is located).  Edit/Paste to print a picture of the window in any other program.

        

 Paint  Assignment                                          5 Pts.

Practice using the mouse, opening, closing & resizing windows, & pulling down menus

Draw a picture in the Paint program

Print the picture and turn in

 

 

Format & Copy Disk Assignment                 5 Pts.

To Format a disk:  (Erase a disk)
Put a disk into the A: drive         
Double
click on the My Computer icon on the desktop         
Single
click on  Floppy A:         
Pull down the File menu and choose Format.  Click on Start

Copy the disks that your instructor gives you:

          Put the teacher’s data disk to be copied in the A: drive
          Double click on the My Computer icon on the desktop       
          Single click on Floppy A:
          Pull down the File menu and choose Copy Disk.  (When it is finished reading
          The original disk, you will take it out and put in your blank disk)

Have your instructor check your disks to get the points for the assignment.  Return instructors disks.

 

 

Print Assignment                                                        5 Pts.

Get into Microsoft Word and type your name.

Type a paragraph about what you have learned so far in this class, and what you still want to learn.  This assignment must be at least 5 sentences.   Be sure and proof your work for grammar and spelling errors.
