Sleep, dear child, and do not cry;
Let me sing you a lullaby.
I'll sing you a song of simple joy.
I'll sing you a song of a little toy.
A tiny bear with eyes of blue;
A little boy with love so true.
He held this bear, so dear to him;
He held this bear so near to him.
It slept beside him every night;
It stayed beside him, held so tight.
"Tell me, boy, do you love me so?"
"I'll tell you, bear, my love still grows."
And so the bear lived out his days,
But time contrived to slip away.
The bear grew old, his seams had rent;
An eye was lost, his nose had bent.
The boy grew older, his love had strayed
Away from the bear whose coat had frayed.
Many years passed and the boy found a bride,
But the lonely bear just sat and cried,
Until the day the wife found him there
And pitied the state of the lonely bear.
She sewed back his eye and unbent his nose;
She mended his rips from his head to his toes.
She replaced his coat and fixed every part,
But could not mend his broken heart.
A broken heart must be properly tended
With love and care to be properly mended.
She knew only one would treasure this pearl,
So the bear became a gift to her girl.
And so the bear with eyes so blue
Found another child whose love was true.
