Hi.. this is the Second Edition of the old Sanawarian newsletter. It is dedicated to this years founders.
Initial reports from our correspondents is that founders went off extremely well. Our US correspondent H.S. Maini was a little too inebriated to take good notes but it thankfully more diligent correspondents have been able to provide a clearer picture of founders. Since Dr. H. S. Maini (hmaini@dbna.com)(Hopsy does have a doctorate in Mathematics from Syracuse) was the most succinct I've transcribed his response. "Rawlley it was great!! It was the best damn three days of my life man !! you really missed a great time !! Man the OS party went on till four in the morning! I don't know what to say it was just great!! Also Harpal was very impressed with the speeches by the individual students during NCC. Finally Hopsy writes he sat next to "thilly-billy" at the OS meeting .. I said who is thilly billy.. He said don't you remember Silly Billy the king of the pirates in Pirates of Penzance.. ( harry@daliwal.com (Harry Daliwal) NBD '71-81)(909) 224-3569.)
Happened to be the few fortunate ones that attended Founders '97. It was a blast and Sanawar has changed for the better. Good old UD is the best thing that could have happened to Sanawar.
I met Harpal Maini (Hopsy) and he did mention something about you organizing an OS chapter in the States. I am curious and obviously interested in getting more information from you.
Now a short letter from Lt. Gen. Gurbir Mansingh (Oona's father) mansingh@giasdl01.vsnl.net.in (mansingh@giasdl01.vsnl.net.in)
I was writing to give you my impressions of the 150 year celebrations at Sanawar.
It was all very competently organized and even though more than 2000 Oss showed up there were no unmanageable traffic jams or impossible queues. The events were nicely spaced out with plenty of time to dawdle with friends or just savor the lovely campus which had all been spruced up for the occasion.
Just a couple of words about the different events. There was a very moving remembrance ceremony at the cemetery which had the walls repaired and the gardens freshened up. The HM recalled the headmasters of the past as well as others who had been buried there and their contribution to Sanawar and the school choir sang some hymns and then the entire congregation sang the school song, which in the setting of the pines, seemed more appropriate than any assembly hall.
The NCC parade and trooping of colors was immaculate, as a former military man I can certify to that. I though liked best of all the informal march past by the OSs in their different batches at the conclusion. Incidentally there were about fifty OSs from England of the pre 47 classes.
The old chapel has been converted into a museum which it would be nice to browse through by oneself without the hordes of visitors. The first night's entertainment was a very ambitious and competent production of nothing less than the Mahabarata itself and the final night's tattoo was equally impressive.
Speeches were an innovation in that , after brief and appropriate remarks by the HM different children took over to talk about different aspects of the school. I must say they spoke much more impressively than either the chief guest or the Governor who later released the commemorative stamp on the occasion. It is a lovely stamp and if you haven't got one already tell me and I shall send it to you.
At the OSs meeting they announced something very significant, that the
Govt. has agreed to hand over the school to the School Trust and the management
of the school will henceforth be totally in the hands of the Board of Governors
which includes a number of OSs. So the future of Sanawar, to make it or
break it will now be the major responsibility of the OSs. .
##### " This is an important point which I hit on earlier -
Ed.####
I am afraid we missed the final OSs dinner dance as we had to return
to Delhi and you will have to get a separate account of that.
Founders was great. NCC was particularly good. The OS Party on the 3rd Night was unreal - close to 1700 people. Everyone was dancing, singing, eating, BOOZING (not in that order). There was a television crew.
The Food was done by Essex (an old Sanawarian - Sanjay Goel SBD-86), and was great. People were still rocking at 3:30 when I left.
Should provide a more detailed report soon.
We all hope to do it more often.
Founders was great fun and of course for us with Riyan rather hectic !!!
We spent the 1st night at Karnal ( Shivneet & Sandip's farm ) .Viki (NBD - 86 batch) & Aman, Tandip & her husband Samir and of course the boys and Chitwan(Sandip's wife ) were there .
Got to Chandigarh to Sanjay (Goel - SBD86) & Bindiya's house - had a quick lunch and went up to school .Reached there in POURING rain and hail ,so spent an hour or so in Gaskell hall -everyone who was arriving was going straight there . One OS who was freezing made the headboy give her his sweater and make a mug (Bath ) full of Coffee !!!!Riyan was in good form and was being passed around to everyone and enjoying it !! Toby was there though just for those few hours as he had a meeting in Bombay the next day .Sachin (Taneja ) Siddharth (Kapur ) with wife Cimiron ,Anu (Sharma ) ,Vikram (Maira ) Manjot (Purewal ),Kamal (Ahuja ) and a lot of older and younger were there - amongst the younger -a fair amount of PYT's (pretty young things) whose presence kept the eyes ofthe older ones (Imran's included !!) busy .
When the rain let up we went up to Birdwood and then on to CDH for Tea - where we had tea and Doggies !!!! Had to bribe the Bearers for teas of course. Many of the bearers are still there -Manful and Vixen to name a few . By this time I was exhausted (Very Unfit !) and we had to get Riyan down to Chandi for dinner so we left .
Bndiya and Sanjay have the cutest little son -Armaan - all of 2 and jabbering away - Riyan and he had good fun together . That night Sanjay invited some OSs over for dinner -Jaidip (Khurana ) , Gappu (Bharatram ) ,Simu (Somal )with his wife ,Abhinav (Pom pom ) and a few others ..
Zehra ,Vikram and Maliha had also reached Chandi and were staying with Vikrams cousins - we all left together for Sna ' on the 3rd morning . By the time we got up to school it was already lunch time - so we first went up to Birdy and fed the kids and then went to the Sports center were we had lunch .. Then we wandered around and met up with people and teachers - Mr. .Matharu, Mrs Soloman , Tuckerman who is now in the office , Ms .Bakshi , Thappo ,Jaya (Johnson ) ,Rashmi , Gunita , Khats , Renata (Ahuja - now married to a Yugoslav and mother to a 2 year old son ) ,Omi ,Sushant (Mallik ) ,Anisha (Pershad ) , to name a few . I believe there was a beutiful service at the cemetry but we didn't go - as at that time I was feeding Riyan .Was ready to head back to Chandi by 5 p (I was on Riyan standard time !!!) so I went back with Zehra ,Vikram and Maliha and my son ,leaving my husband to party the night away - there was an OS dinner/dance that night !!!Sanjay was doing the food that night ( He owns Essex farm s ) so they both told me that they really had no interest in staying for the dinner but Sanjay had to start it off and I mran and he would leave at about 10.30 they didn't get back till 3:30 AM. Anyway the party I believe was AMAZING !! The whole of Birdwood -the corridors and the outside was jam packed with people dancing - the party ended at 5am !!!!!!
Got to Sna ' on the 4th at 9am .The NCC was AMAZING ..The chief guest was the Navy Chief - Vishnu Bhagat who is an OS himself . The Headmaster gave a good speech interspersed with very good , many extempore speeches by present Snarians .Then the oldest OS- a n English lady -who was in sna' in the 30's or 40's presented a flame to show continuity to the youngest PS.There were a whole bunch of Snarians of that vintage -very sweet !!! The Governer of HP arrived by helicopter (landed in Barnes) and released a First day cover and a stamp of Sanawar .
The Chapel has been made into a permanent museum and is beautiful .It's filled with memoribillia, military stuff ,the palanquin that was used to carry Lady Mountbatten up to school etc.
The headmasters house is STUNNING !!!It has been put up in less than 8 months and is truly beautiful . Other OS's - Niharika (Bhasin ) ,Hopsi and his wife ,Gagan (Virmani ),Bharat (Gill ) ,Bikramjit (Bizz bizz), Preeti (Mehta ), Anju (Khanna ), Nadim (Haider - who is going to be a Father next month ) Riaz (Mama) ,Mandira (Singh),Ducky (Sodhi ).
There was a party that night too but we didn't stay as we had left Riyan in Chandi and we were anxious to get back . All in all a fabulous trip .Sanawar remains much the same and we're all set to register Riyan there .
I'm sure I've left out stuff but thats all I can remember right now ! I believe the school play which was held at the Staff court was very well done and the sets were magnificent .
Observations from Dr. Dhillon on founders The Sanawarian Newsletter 1st Nov. 1997. as reported by Vivek Samta..
To my mind founders by and large went off very well. Of course the play, the parade and the tattoo were even more magnificent than they usually are and hats off to the children who worked very hard and tirelessly, to make everything so perfect. What gave this founder's a touch of class a degree above the usual founders were the smaller ceremonies. The memorial service at the cemetery was truly moving ceremony and to my mind remains the high point Founder's this year. The inauguration of the 2nd war memorial and the museum also gave a higher degree of intensity to the celebrations, and the one little ceremony at Peacestead, where the oldest Sanawarian, handed over to the light of Sanawars tradition to the youngest Sanawarian, fired the imagination of the media and more, our reporter gave it center place in his report on founders. There is a steady stream of letters and cards congratulating the children and school on the tremendous success of founder's. Even three weeks after the celebration the stream of letters and cards show no signs of drying up. All in all a truly satisfying Founder's and of a sufficient degree of perfection to befit the sesqui-centenary year.
The best can even be better as I said in my speech we learnt a great deal from the sheer logistics of trying to cope up with so much traffic and trying to fee so many people. The track I am relieved to say, both on the floor and in the parking, was perfectly controlled. But meals problem was that we had no idea of the umber of people, who would be coming and so few people, both parents and OS cared to respond the circular which the bursar had sent out as early as April and May.
Some inconvenience was caused to guest during meal times, and all I can say at this stage is that I deeply regret that, but a valuable lessons have been learnt by this and I am sure that next year, Founder's will see these creases ironed out..
Ed. comments: "Lets make sure were not guilty of not responding or letting people know where going to founders or to any other big event. Its hard for the host to plan."
Now a short poem by Manisha Nayar UVI B entitled founders
18th Sept. With classes and preps gone the preparations were on. And the school was ' in gear' to celebrate its 150th year.
The rest of the poem can be picked up on the webpage.. this month.. Aditya continues to do a yeoman's job in keeping the page together.

Stock tip for the day:
EDAPY (Nasdaq) 7.25 I am recommending that you look at purchasing this company. Edapy Nasdaq Web Page http://www.edaptechnomed.com/ trading at approximately $ 7.25 per share.. This company is a French manufacturer of Lithotripters, Prostratrons and has in the developmental stage a microwave treatment of Cancer tissue. The company has about $ 2.5 a share in cash.. It is generating ongoing service and spare parts revenue from the lithotripter business its been in, for about 10 years. The revenues are growing well the stock was an IPO in September and fell from the offering price $9.00 to $ 6.25 its been bouncing around $ 7.00 per share for a little while. It may go down further with the typical tax selling associated with December and should get a nice lift in January. The company is growing rapidly its earning are estimated to grow around 200 % in 1998 and another 100 % in 1999.. The technology appears to be quite efficacious .. its been around since 1991 in Europe and has shown excellent results. This treatment allows a non invasive treatment of the prostrate with excellent results the machines are expensive about $ 450,000 and are generally bought by large practices and leasing companies. This procedure will allows a urologist to boost their income quite considerably. There are several competitors in the market the largest of which is Johnson and Johnson. There machine doesn't appear to be as good but their sales force is a definite threat. The prostration appears to be the most effective. In addition Siemens owns 15 % of the company and is tying up with them to promote the sales of Prostratrons in the US , Saudi Arabia and the far east. In addition Siemens is helping them to develop a more portable unit for doctors offices. In addition Prime Medical has tied in with a Californian group to purchase some machines and place them with their practice. The company has the potential to generate above average returns of the next 36 months.
