      Answers to Frequently Asked Questions:

    • Who are your "typical" students?
This is both a difficult and easy question to answer. Over the years, we have had men and women do very well in our program having very diverse backgrounds, coming from all walks of life.

By far the most common person to enter our program are recent high school graduates. Some of these people have had drafting in high school, some have not -- some have had computer training, some have not. Since our program starts with the basics, all people are welcome, regardless of their previous experience.

There are always men and women that come from the military and from industry wanting to further their training. These people come to the program with a wealth of information, sometimes very relavant to the Architectural Drafting curriculum, sometimes not, but thier experience is always a great benifit to them.

    • How long does the course of study last?
Students that complete the Architectural Drafting curriculum graduate with an Associates of Applied Science (AAS) Degree in Architectural Drafting and Estimating Technology. The typical (full-time) student will attend classes for 18 months, or 4 semesters. (Fall semester runs from mid-August to late December, Spring Semester runs from early December to mid-May)

There are students that choose to take the course in a longer period of time. Some students are parents, some have jobs, while still others find the curriculum easier to absorb in an extended period. If this is desired by the student the students advisor should be contacted as soon as is possible so the coursework can be rearranged in a sequence that works.

    • What kind of jobs are available upon graduation?
There are many more jobs that come in for our students than we could possibly fill. The Placement Office (under the direction of Marlyn Fredrickson) contacts many companies in order to find employers that are in need of students with skills in our field.
The most common types of positions our students take are in drafting, estimating, sales, construction management and project coordination. The most common types of firms our students work in are Contracting Firms (both residential and commercial), building supply centers, construction component manufacturers, and Architectural Firms.

    • When do classes begin? The typical student begins the course in mid August. Again, there are students that choose or are forced by circumstances to begin 2nd Semester (early January). If this is the case, the student should speak with an advisor as soon as possible to plan the schedule for the coming semesters.

    • Where do the students live while attending NDSCS?
Most of the students live in one of the 8 dormitories that are on campus. There are also married housing units on the north side of campus. While many students remain in the dorms for both years spent attending Science, some 2nd year students decide to rent an apartment or house in the surrounding area.

    • Where is the department located?

All of the faculty offices and most of the classrooms that house the Architectural Drafting Department are in Horton Hall, directly east of Old Main. There are eight faculty offices, four drafting labs, one construction materials lab, one computer-aided drafting lab and a reference lab. We also use one computer-aided drafting lab in the "Tech Center".
