(WASHINGTON, DC - 8/5/98) The latest issue (Aug. 10, p. 55) of U.S. News & World Report magazine (circulation: 2.3 million) contains a 2/3-page advertisement in which the authors refer to Islam as "virulent" and claim Muslims believe "any act of violence is permitted and encouraged." (The dictionary defines "virulent" as: 1. Extremely poisonous, pathogenic. Said of a disease, toxin or microorganism, or 2. Full of hate. From the Latin word for "virus.")

by the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) showed a decrease in
acts of violence against American Muslims, but indicated a 18
percent increase in total incidents and a 60 percent rise in discrimination
