The Juliana Theory - 'Understand This Is A Dream' (TN1135)

Most of the members of this band have a background in hardcore- and metal-bands. The founder and leader of the band, Brett Detar, played in ZAO for a while, for instance… So when I first heard about this band I expected a ‘hard’ sound. How wrong I was !! This band is all about pure emotional rock-music in the vein of Hot Water Music, The Get-Up-Kids, Fugazi and so on… EMO is one of the hype’s in the music scene the past few years and this band really sets the standard in this style. I dare to say that the musicians in TJT have more technical skills than the bands mentioned above and besides that, they have more variety in their songs as well. They’re really punk-pop-style in some songs, but the difficult guitar-parts really set them apart from this style. The whole album is really bombastic, melodical, groovy and very well-played and well-produced. Another word that fits this band is “mystery”. The lyrics, the booklet and the whole atmosphere are really poetic and artificial. Maybe that’s the reason why I can’t get enough of this band and this album. Lyrically most of the songs seem to be poetical love-songs. Pure musical emotion just the way I like it and certainly another awesome Tooth & Nail-band with the skills to become one of the leading emo-/rock-bands in the next century !!! My favorite song is “Constellation”, which takes almost 7 minutes and has a powerful guitar-riff, exploding in the middle of the song and repeating on and on and on… Tears in my eyes !!
