Sensuous Oriental Looks

back

Brilliance. Sensuousness. Nothing quite gives
theses attributes like Oriental fashion. Once
perceived as outdated and unfashionable,
traditional Chinese outfits are making a comeback,
in style!
East meets West. Combining the best of both
worlds, Chinese traditional clothing are going
through a revolution. Blending the latest trends of
the world fashion while retaining the essence of
the Oriental styles, it becomes a unique selection
of wardrobe.
|
Back in 1992, a renowned European airline had
organised an exclusive oriental fashion show, in
line with their effort expanding into the eastern
air bounds. This is when Jimmy Khoo, the founder of
Chinatown Classic, sees the potential of Chinese
traditional clothing striking back.
"It's been decades that western countries have
been influencing us with their fashion and culture.
Now, it's our time to strike back. We hold on to
our motto of bringing the eastern to the west.
Although it might sound a bit tough but it is
achievable with a bit of wit and effort," Khoo
said.

The Cheongsam is famous of its tight fitting,
which compliments the ladies' elegance and beauty.
Traditional Cheongsam, which is normally full
length with long sleeves, has now been modified. At
full length, it can be worn to functions or
dinners. At mid-length, it looks perfect for
women-at-work. The short mini Cheongsam looks chic
and trendy.

Mainly made from silk, the Oriental clothing has
a shiny finishing. It is the reflection of
radiance. The detailed motif printed on the fabric,
is the element that makes each piece unique.
The Chinese styles allow lots of mix and match
possibilities nowadays. Wear it with your favourite
pants, jeans, skirt or wrap-over. The blouses come
in a variety of cuttings. But the trademark of it
is always the mandarin collar and frog buttons.
Embroidery is an important element in
traditional Chinese costumes. Flowers, leaves,
birds or even dragons, together with the
combination of colours add life to an originally
simple dress.

"Northern China, especially Shanghai and
Beijing, have a long history in fashion and
craftsmanship. It is considered as the master of
fine workmanship. Therefore we employ a designer
and some tailors there to produce our merchandise.
All the embroideries are hand-sewn," Khoo
explained.

Chinatown Classic constantly modifies and
betters its merchandise. It also takes on the task
to revive old and extinct oriental fashion. For
example, the du-dou, which used to be undergarments
for the ladies in the olden times are recently
revived and modified into a kerchief-top. The
unique combination of cutting, embroidery and
material gives the du-dou a new life. In fact, it
has been gaining great acceptance!
The modified and enhanced outfits are suitable
for both formal as well as casual occasions. A day
out in the city, putting on your favourite piece,
makes you the attraction in the crowded streets.
Look different yet presentable. That is the
philosophy of modern dressing.

Not just for the ladies, Oriental styles are
also tailored for the men. Bruce Lee? Or Jackie
Chan? The Kungfu suits are not just for martial art
gurus. It is now a fashion statement for men. Local
sensation like Poetic Ammo worn it at shows, so did
international stars like Jackie Chan, at his movie
premiere recently.
Extremely soft and silky material makes the
outfit for men extra comfortable to wear. The
baju-melayu-like tailoring is popular among the
Malays too. Slip on your favourite jeans to match
with your favourite colour. You will look dashing
and cool.
