A Spring Night
A chaste moon shines
under the eyes of
a thousand twinkling stars.
Shadows curl
like wisps of smoke
twisted by the soft night wind.
Fingertips of barren trees
reach upward toward
the taunting silver
Moonlight.
Black velvet air
drifts in through open
windows, slips past the
watchful eyes of
Dreamcatchers and
gently kisses foreheads of
restless children.
Young couples
walk hand in hand.
Drugged by the strong
lavender fragrance of lilacs,
they utter promises
of undying love and
whisper sonnets of
everlasting devotion
in the sweet spring night.
Older, wiser partners
share the nighttime
in silence.
Leaving their eyes, lips, bodies
to convey their thoughts.
Living each moment
to its fullest.
Taking nothing for granted
except their fidelity.
Time passes.
Stealthily out of
darkened houses creep pairs of
nervous young parents
and cautious teenagers.
Trying to steal a few
precious moments
alone together before
Discovery.
They stay as the moon climbs
high in the night sky,
descends to touch the
eastern horizon,
and disappears to
welcome the
morning star.
As the sun's first rays
begin to kiss
the earth,
they reluctantly
disperse to their homes,
not quite ready
to face
Reality.
