Notes
This
storied rivalry of football powers continues. One might as well flip a
coin since of the 79 games in the series Oklahoma has won 52.5 percent
(40-36-3) of them. the series started in 1912 and was continuous from 1921
to 1995. Big 12 scheduling gave the series a two-year hiatus in 1998-99
but the 2000 showdown of No. 1 Nebraska vs. No. 3 Oklahoma showed once
again how this rivalry has been on the national front. OU-NU met twice
in the 1978 season. The No. 4 Huskers upset No. 1 Oklahoma 17-14 in the
regular season and then the Sooners returned the favor with a 31-24 win
in the 1979 Orange Bowl. In the last 38 meetings at least one of these
two teams were ranked at kick off. More impressive is in 34 of those 38
one of the two teams was ranked in the Associated Press Top 10. Since the
1971 "Game of the Century" contest both Oklahoma and Nebraska have been
ranked in the Top 10 at kick off 16 times and in the Top 5 on nine occasions
(1971-72-78-84-85-86-87-00-01 -- note this includes 2001). Oklahoma's win
last year snapped a Nebraska series-long seven-game winning streak. Last
year No. 3 Oklahoma scored 31 straight points to overcome a 14-0 deficit
to win 31-14 in Norman. The Sooners scored 24 points in the second quarter
with TDs from current Sooners Quentin Griffin, Curtis Fagan and Josh Norman.
Husker QB Eric Crouch rushed for 101 yards on 23 carries and one TD.
