APARTAMENTOS COLON
La Palma, in the West of the archipielago, is the fourth largest island, and one of the most beautiful of anywhere. Its steep cliff faces climb from the sea to the spine, wich is a long rocky ridge above 1200 metres (3850 feet) for most of its length, and reaching 2426 metres (7,890 feet) in the Caldera de Taburiente in the North. The lava gullies that are home to so much of the vegetation descend the mountanside all round the island.
The soils in the South are purely volcanic rock and gravel (picón) generally located in hoyos - the lava gullies or ravines- while, in the Nort, there is a greater presence of clay and sand on less steep slopes that allows more efficient cultivation. Despite the luxurient environment, the presence of volcanic activity is as strong as ever.
The last volcanic eruption in the Canaries took place in 1971 in the South of the island of La Palma - an island with such a sub-tropical environment that it is known as "the Green Island", because of it's higher rainfall, and wich is fundamental to the wide range of agriculutural products that are produced such as bananas, wine, advocadoes, almonds, mangoes, papayas, tobacco and, most famous of all, hand rolled cigars, wich are exported worldwide, and are the real life blood of its 80,000 people.
This town, like others in La Palma, has been suffering the emigration effects, that's why the population has not increase in the last years. There is a modern wine store that makes and sells wine (a very important product in the island), about one million litres a year. Here, you can find a lot of small beaches and calas: El Faro, Playa Nueva, Punta Larga and La Zamora are the best ones, you can dive and see a lot of beautiful species. Furthermore you can visit the Volcan San Antonio (1677) and Teneguia(1971)
In the last week of August, it's "Las fiestas de la vendimia", there is a typical tradition where the authorities give wine to everybody.
