This was our first hike of the spring. We wanted something simple to get our blood flowing and something to get us into decent shape. We figured that since the trailhead for this climb is only 5 miles from home, that we would give it a shot.
Well, it is a beautiful climb, and one that gets you going, but don't expect it to get you into shape. It was relatively easy and quick, not exactly what we were looking for. But we have no regrets in doing it. I think it would make for a great showshoe....Maybe this winter!
We started from the trailhead off Stagecoach Road, about 5 miles south of I-70 at Evergreen Parkway. The trail is real easy to follow and maps are available at the entrance to the Open Space. It is about 4.5 miles to the summit and it is over before you know it. I was truly surprised by the views, which is one reason why I don't regret doing the hike. The views of Mount Evans are commanding, I don't think it gets better anywhere else. You can also see Epaulet and Rosalie Peaks from the summit, and down into the basin that contains Beartrack Lakes, although they are not visible.
Overall the hike was fun and it only took a short time away from our afternoon. There were some really friendly chipmunks at the top, and they will practically eat from your hand.
