Cub Lake

Located just above Moraine Park in Rocky Mountain National Park, this lake is just 2.3 miles from the trailhead. The hike in is quick and easy until the last 0.5 mile or so. The last section of the trail is pretty steep, but not overly difficult.

Nancy and I did this hike and intended to get a little fishing in when we got there. The weather was less than good, as it was cloudy and it tried to rain several times. When we arrived at the lake, it was covered with lily pads over about 75% of its surface. Looking into the water we could tell that there was ample under water vegetation and not many fish. We decided to take in the view rather than wasting the effort to fish the lake.

The lake is a beautiful setting and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a short yet beautiful hike. A couple of words of wisdom though: don't feed any wild animals. When we sat down to eat a snack at the lake, a couple of ducks high-tailed it over to us and kept pestering us for some food. They are obviously used to humans, as we could have picked them up and taken them home as pets. It did yield some great photos though (see the photos page).

Along with me on the hike: Nancy

Total Round Trip Time: 2.5 hours (0.5 at the lake)
