This quaint lake is located about 4 miles north of Grant on Guanella Pass Road. It is a short but steep 3 mile hike from the trailhead. If you don't have a 4 wheel drive and are headed to the trailhead during the wet season, don't go. It is not a real difficult route, but there are several ruts that turn to mud with a little bit of water.
The hike follows Smelter Gulch all the way to the top, at nearly 12,000 feet. As the picture shows, it snows early in this part of the mountains, so go during July and August. The trail is easy to follow, no real hard spots, just steep in several spots.
The fishing at the lake is less than impressive, although the fish are visible in the lake. They are apparently well fed, as they wouldn't bite at anything.
The hike overall is beautiful. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for great photo shots. It ends in a valley that abounds with great shots.
