  2. Is easier to swim and breath on the surface when the BC is not fully inflated.
  3. Dive in calm water until you feel proficient enough to try more challenging conditions.
  4. If you don't know the diving site, try to seek local advise.
  5. Before you try any special activity, make sure you are comfortable with your basic diving skills.
  6. Wreck diving: Start with shallow wrecks in calm conditions and proceed to deeper wrecks when you gain experience.
  7. Artifact hunting: Check all local regulations concerning artifacts before collecting them.
  8. Spearfishing and game collecting: Fish and game regulations vary from state to state. Learn them and abide by them.
  9. Your dive knife should accompany you on every dive.
  10. Your wetsuit should fit snugly but not impair your ability to breath.
  11. Make sure that you are comfortable on the surface, before beginning any dive.
  12. Make sure that all your other equipment is ready before you begin putting on the wetsuit.
  13. Do not alter your equipment in such a way that it violates current safety procedures as outlined in dive manuals.
  14. Punch three small holes in your cold water hood, this allows any air trapped in the hood to vent.
  15. Three finger neoprene gloves are much warmer than five finger gloves.
  16. Never hold your breath
  17. Ascend from all dives at a rate not to exceed 60 ft. per minute
