Chelsea 1 (Wise) Everton 1 (Cadamarteri) Premiership 11th March 2000
Like watching paint dry, but less interesting
A more seamlessly boring, frustrating, irritating match you would be hard put to find in a month of Saturdays. Chelsea gave up after Everton got their equaliser, and I felt like leaving early. That's it. The rest of this report will be just so much padding. Things had started so promisingly. Chelsea looked as lively as a side that had had a draining Champions League game two and a half days previously possibly could. They threatened to score many times, but chose to mainly shoot at the keeper (Zola). They nearly scored the winner in the final minute, but a fine diving header was directed straight at the keeper (Morris). Vialli almost (but not quite) made an inspired substitution when he took off the disappointing Jon Harley for Gus Poyet, who loped on and headed the ball inches over with his first touch. Chelsea scored after half an hour, when John Collins, playing at full back to cover for injuries, pushed the ball off Sutton's toe and into the path of Dennis Wise, who showed the strikers once again how it's done. It's too depressing to go into the awful details about how Chelsea let Everton back into the game. They should have been cruising comfortably for the win, and appeared to be doing just that, when an innocous-looking throw from the half way line found Cadamarteri, who had wriggled past Leboeuf. He half-turned and shot and that was that. Fair enough. It can happen. What is inexcusable is the fact that Chelsea didn't rise to the occasion by going up a gear after the equaliser. They appeared, with a couple of notable exceptions (Morris and Wise) to just give up. Chris Sutton had a shocker, even by his standards. How much longer are we going to have to put up with him ? In spite of the constant urgings from the crowd, Chelsea were unwilling or unable to get the winner. It looked for all the world like they'd settled for the draw to me, and it made me angry. With respect to Everton, who were suffering a bad injury crisis, Chelsea should have scored at least six, but failed to convert the myriad of chances that they created; the story of our season. Let's hope the Feyenoord match will see a bit more spark and better finishing, because we won't get as many chances as we did in the home leg, that's for sure.. What do YOU think ? Want to add your point of view ? Here's your chance to send me some feedback. NB: Abuse from opposing fans will be laughed at and then ignored, so don't bother wasting your time. Considered, intelligent argument, presented in the spirit of friendly rivalry guarantees a response.
