Chelsea 3 (Poyet, Dalla Bona, Gudjohnsen) Bradford City 0 Premiership 23rd December 2000
Flattery To Deceive ?
We needed this result so badly that it didn't bear thinking about. Defeat by Bradford City would not be acceptable and also would not bear thinking about, but, what with the erratic nature of Chelsea's recent performances it could so easily have been on the cards. Bradford have two wins to their name this season, Chelsea (2-0 at Valley Parade) and Coventry City (2-1 at Valley Parade). What an ignominy it would be to be the only team in the premiership who were beaten twice by the team most likely finishing bottom before departing to nationwide land. Saying that though, how many of you would credit that the only side in last years Premiership that Manchester United did not beat was Wimbledon - and where are they now? It is so not over until the fat lady has sung. I do hope that Bradford beat Coventry though, and condemn the Sky Blues to a nationwide future too. Over 40 years in the top flight, how the hell do they manage it, I do believe that their cathedral is not that old. However, in Coventry's favour, and believe me this is a big plus, the City is the only place in this fair land of ours where a Welshman is forbidden to enter by a bylaw long since passed and for the most part forgotten. Last season, and certainly the one before that, the expectation would have been for a display match where the opposition were run ragged and toyed with by Chelsea's mastery of the low passing game spiced up with a few Zola nutmegs and a perfunctory single save by De Goey. Zola, it must be admitted is still Mr. Velcro boots, and the passing of the others is only just short of up to scratch, De Goey, however is a different matter. Next seasons fantasy football points for De Goey will be equivalent in value to a Goalkeeper from one of the good teams from the Scottish Premier League, or maybe even Rangers. Bradford brought a derisory 500 fans with them and a large block of the lower east was still empty, I guess the empty seats were for their missus who had decided to go up the Kings Road instead to do a bit of posh shopping; let's face it, it's got to be better than the Arndale Centre. I suppose this could account for an incident that was announced in the second half - "Please use Fulham Road and not Kings Road because it is closed to traffic and pedestrians following an incident" - Some fishwifery I'll be bound. One person we were genuinely glad that the Bantams brought with them was Super Dan Petrescu. The old cry of 'Super, SuperDan
.' rang out on his announcement and he applauded the crowd in return. It is bittersweet when something like this happens, good to see the old chap, sorry that he no longer wears blue, understanding that this was a career move, upset that the ambition did not stretch further than the poorer side of the People's Republic of West Yorkshire. My sparring chum today was not the very lovely Tania who had something cooking that day with a holiday in South Africa to prepare for, so, a mate called Mark stepped into the fray. He has not been to the Bridge for a while, indeed the last time he was at a football game was in Brazil when he saw Vasco da Gama and some other Brazilian top beat combo doing their thing at one of the world's most impressive stadiums, so impressive that there is now even a song about it - the Macarena. (Boom boom ! - Priesty) I found myself apologising for Chelsea's opening performance, which was the crap side of dire and bedded down for the worst. Chelsea did finally realise that when a ball is passed you should make some effort to meet it and hey presto, the game took a turn for the good. John Terry, Jon Harley, Celestine Babayaro, Mario Melchiot (off whose assists I have seen most of Chelsea's goals go in this term), Sam Dalla Bona, Jody Morris and Eidur Gudjohnsen are beginning to form a young backbone around which the future is looking likely to be built. Sam Dalla Bona and John Terry win the prizes for most improved youngsters, indeed, a couple of reports ago I made note that Dalla Bona is eager and aggressive but he failed in taking a touch too many in the box in front of experienced defenders; not this time ladies and gentlemen - oh no - the goal was well and truly found. That is going to do him the world of good and let's expect many more from "there's only one dalla bona". The final score lied - Chelsea did not cruise to victory in this one, which is what the score line suggests. Bradford battled and that spirit will serve them well if they can keep it up. Hopefully Middlesbrough will start dropping points, Coventry slide into an abyss and then the FA invents another rule in time for the end of the season; the third relegation spot be awarded to the team who amass the most popular votes when asked 'Which team do you think should be relegated from the Premiership this season?' See ya Tottenham! What do YOU think ? Want to add your point of view ? Here's your chance to send me some feedback. NB: Opposing fans: abuse will be laughed at and then binned, so don't waste your time. Considered, intelligent argument, presented in the spirit of friendly rivalry guarantees a response.
