Amanda followed up her solid showing at the Australian Open with an excellent performance in Tokyo. She swept past promising Spaniard, Magui Serna in her first match, before coming back from 5-2 down in the third set to defeat Els Callens in the second round. Amanda recovered from that scare by defeating world number one, Lindsay Davenport in the quarter-finals, and then scoring her first ever win over Monica Seles in the semis. Coetzer was stopped by a red-hot Martina Hingis in the finals, but with two wins over top five opponents on indoor carpet, Amanda showed she is well on the way to finding the form that she displayed in 1997.
