ISRAELI PREMIER LEAGUE, 2004-05 -
THE STATISTICS

Many summaries have been made about the wonderful Israeli League of 2004-05, both official and unofficial. One of the ways to sum up the season, though undoubtedly not complete and perfect, is to look upon the bare facts. Who was the best, who played well both home and away, who scored most, etc. I tried to make these summaries as short and interesting as possible, to touch every relevant and interesting point that can explain the relegation or the great success. Unfortunately, as this year I spent large parts of time in Germany, and therefore was away from the real Israeli action, the summaries lack the certain information (keepers, goal passes, the best, etc.) they possessed in the last years; still, I think it's better to have at least something than nothing at all. So, don't judge me too severely, would you??

NOTE: I would like to thank my foreign subscribers who fixed my spelling in some of the foreign names. Here I'll try to bring the names of the foreign players in the most correct spelling possible.

  --------------------------------------------------------------
  Giovanni Rosso's long-range ball found Roberto Colautti inside Sakhnin's
  box, and the Argentinean forward sent a one-toucher towards Gustavo
  Boccoli; Dekel Keinan's foot interfered, however, but the ball went high
  instead of leaving the danger zone. Boccoli, 8 meters from the net,
  positioned himself for an acrobatic flight and sent a truly unstoppable
  scissors kick into the net of Meir Cohen without actually seeing it.

* Prince Deaya, 2:0 vs Bnei-Sakhnin (2:0), Week 20 (Round 2).
  -----------------------------------------------------------
  A brilliant effort by the Liberian forward of the runners-up, who got the
  ball at the box line of Sakhnin, misled a defender with his right foot and
  then shot under the left crossbar of Meir Cohen with the external side of
  his left foot. A mirror image of the famous effort of Juergen Klinsmann
  against Russia at Euro'1996.

THE BEST PLAYER: Ohad Cohen, keeper.

  after just 20 minutes at home, succeeded to turn the game completely even
  before the break and to win it at the end. Holtzman, the penalty misser,

  corner of the helpless Yaniv Wahaba.

* Maor Melikson, Aviram Bruchian,
  Barak Itzhaki, Daniel Heideman - Israel, Olympic.

THE CUP ROAD:
* 1/16.  Hapoel Petakh-Tikwa - 0:1.

THE BIGGEST VICTORY:  4:1 over Hapoel Beer-Sheva, H, Week 06 (Round 1).

THE BIGGEST LOSS:     1:4 to Bnei-Sakhnin, A, Week 05 (Round 1).

THE BEST GOAL:
* Avi Nimni, 3:1 vs Bnei-Yehuda Tel-Aviv (3:2), Week 04 (Round 1).
  ----------------------------------------------------------------
  A miraculous effort! Getting a ball in the box with his back to the net and
  surrounded by 2 defenders, Nimni stopped the ball and just heeled it back.
  The ball was weak, but so precise (into the left corner) and unexpected that
  the stunned Yaniv Wahaba dived late and could only touch the ball, but not
  push it away.

* Aviram Bruchian, 3:1 vs Hapoel Beer-Sheva (4:1), Week 06 (Round 1).
  -------------------------------------------------------------------
  Maccabee Haifa was undoubtedly the best team of the season, but Beitar was
  not to be surpassed in everything concerning the goals rare in their beauty.
  This time it was the turn of the young Aviram Bruchian to spot Mordechai
  Schwartz being miserably positioned in Beer-Sheva's net. The keeper was
  immediately punished by a lob over him. A feat of nothing extraordinary, some
  would say - but definitely not with the forward just leaving a midcircle!

* Lior Asulin, 2:0 vs Hapoel Haifa (2:0), Week 18 (Round 2).
  ----------------------------------------------------------
  "If you aspire, it isn't a miracle". A long ball left Lior Asulin alone in
  the whole field's half of Hapoel Haifa, but it seemed to be too powerful on
  a wet pitch for a forward to reach. When Asulin dived with his legs stretched,
  slid for probably 8 (!) meters and stopped the ball on the line (!) while
  sliding with the rest of his body beyond it, the famous words of Herzl must
  have rung in his ears. The anemic defence of Hapoel Haifa allowed the scorer
  to get up, mislead one defender, play a double pass with Avi Nimni and bomb a
  far corner of Sagi Strauss from 10 meters.

THE BEST PLAYER: Lior Asulin, forward.

  --------------------------------------------------------------
  "I have watched this goal several times on the TV, and I still can't believe
  that I, Gabriel Lima, could do it". This sentiment expressed by the talented
  Brazilian midfielder about his solo effort in "The Goal of the Season" one
  year beforehand, could be as well attributed to his opener against Hapoel
  Tel-Aviv. Dribbling at the right wing and preparing to raise the ball into
  the box, Lima suddenly released an arched masterpiece that landed behind the
  miserably positioned Shavit Elimelekh. As in case of Andoni Goicoechea in his
  famous goal against Germany at WC'1994, it couldn't be concluded whether it
  was an intention or a lucky chance.

THE BEST PLAYER: Eli Abrabanel, midfielder.

  -------------------------------------------------------------------
  Having left behind his psychological problems with changing from Beitar
  Jerusalem to Hapoel Petakh-Tikwa at the start of the season, the young
  and promising forward left his mark in the game 5 minutes from its start,
  and what a goal against his former team it was! Ilya Yavruyan got a great
  ball into the box and headed it home, Korenfein fisted the effort away,
  and Arbeitman reacted first with an impeccable overhead scissors kick to
  open the score.

THE BEST PLAYER: Shlomi Arbeitman, forward.

THE BEST GOAL:
* Biskut Embela, 1:0 vs Bnei-Sakhnin (1:0), Week 29 (Round 3).
  ------------------------------------------------------------
  Brought with a lot of media attention and immediately getting a nickname
  "Bisquit", Biskut Embela could reward his new team with the first goal in
  the Premier League only 4 weeks from the season's end - but it basically
  became the goal that promised Hapoel Tel-Aviv yet another season in the
  Premier League and left Bnei-Sakhnin struggling till the very end. Getting
  a ball inside the box, the young Kenian succeeded to swing 2 defenders and
  to find a gap between the unexperienced substituting keeper Assaf Mendes
  and his right post from a really impossible angle.

THE BEST PLAYER: Shimon Gershon, defender.

THE BEST GOAL:
* Alain Masudi, 2:0 vs Maccabee Tel-Aviv (2:0), Week 14 (Round 2).
  ----------------------------------------------------------------
  Maccabee Tel-Aviv had participated this year in the Champions' League,
  registering both good results and severe humiliations - but perhaps the
  most Champions' League style goal it conceded this season belonged to
  Alain Masudi, formerly the forward of Sturm Graz. Tomer Eliyahu sent
  the Congolese into the box, and Masudi found an empty net with no
  disturbance from the 2 defenders. The most delightful part of the goal
  was the abrupt stop and the change of direction, with which he left the
  helpless Yellow keeper Gal Nir on the ground.

THE BEST PLAYER: Abbas Suan, midfielder.
