Smirnoff Irish League Saturday 26 October 1996 ![]()
Glenavon started brightly and took the lead in the eighth minute. A free kick was floated to the far side of the penalty area, and when it was headed back by Mark Glendinning, Gary Smyth was on hand to head in from close range. Coleraine's passing was lethargic, and they couldn't keep the ball for any substantial period, but they were gifted an equaliser with a 27th minute penalty. Jon Fosberg ran onto a long clearance and rounded ther keeper, only to be brought down by Dermot O'Neill's despairing dive. The Coleraine support shouted for the keeper to be dismissed, but the referee showed only a yellow card and Robbie Bruntoin stepped up to level the scores. Parity was short lived, however, as Glenavon regained the lead shortly before the interval when Glenn Ferguson reached a Sammy Johnston cross. The second half began as the first had ended - with a number of dangerous Glenavon attacks. From the best of these, Grant should have scored, but his tame shot was easily smothered by Lamont. As the half progressed the feeling grew that Coleraine might be able to snatch something, and a shot by Pat McAllister with 20 minutes to go reminded Glenavon that the game was not yet over. The point was enforced further five minutes later when Paul Gaston found himself in space about 15 yards from goal and his first time shot found the corner of the goal. Now Coleraine played with renewed confidence, and began to look for the winner. Then, with about 5 minutes to go, Glenavon spurned another easy chance when Sammy Johnston has a free header from six yards but headsed straight at Lamont. From this possession however the ball was played out to Robbie Brunton on the left. Brunton carries the ball into the Glenavon half and as the defence backed off, he headed toweards the Glenavon area. Only when he started to accelerate towards the area did Glenavon wake up to the possibilities, but by then it was too late and Brunton fired an unstoppable shot low into the corner.
