Loughall 1 Coleraine 1
Bass Irish Cup Quarter Final
Saturday 15 March 1997

Former Linfield goalkeeper Brian Hanley was the Loughall hero as the B Division champions denied the Premier Division leaders an easy passage into the Semi-Finals of the Bass Irish Cup.

Due to injuries, Coleraine started without any recognised wide men, with Sam Shiels and Eamon Doherty occupying unfamiliar berths on the right and left wings respectively. This further congested an already tight pitch, and the first half was a very scrappy affair. Coleraine had the better of the early exchanges with David McCallan twice going close with headers from Robbie Brunton crosses. First, an effort from a left wing cross cleared the crossbar and landed on the roof of the goal, and soon afterwards a right wing cross found the top scorer free inside the penalty area, but his misdirected header shaved the outside of the post. Coleraine deservedly took the lead on 20 minutes. A free kick was awarded on the edge of the area for a cynical foul on Eamon Doherty, and when the ball was touched to Robbie Brunton, he let fly with a fierce left foot strike into the top corner. Coleraine looked set to dominate the game, especially when a 25-yard Sam Shiels thunderbolt flew just over, but Loughall equalised 10 minutes from the interval. A left wing corner was floated intowards the near post, and Keith Halliday glanced a header wide of Davy O'Hare into the net.

Coleraine upped the tempo in the second half, going close on numerous occasions. Both Brendan Aspinall and Stephen Young threatened with early efforts before Loughall came back into the game. Indeed, the home side could have snatched a shock winner when Gary Henderson latched onto a long through ball, but Davy O'Hare raced quickly from his goal and made a vital save. A couple of long range Robbie Brunton efforts tested the Loughall keeper, before the final Coleraine onslaught. First, Danny Shipp latched onto a bouncing ball only to see his effort crash off the underside of the crossbar, and then Paul Gaston was twice denied by excellent saves from Hanley.

1. David O'Hare
Blameless for the goal, and kept the Bannsiders in the cup with a vital save near the end. (8)
2. Oliver McAuley
The usual consistent performance (7)
3. Robbie Brunton
Man of the Match. Scored with one magnificant strike, delivered a constant stream of pinpoint crosses, and had at least 3 other worthy efforts - all from left back. (9)
4. Brendan Aspinall
Went close near the end and was rarely troubled by the Loughall attack. (7)
5. Paul Gaston
Never under pressure - mistake free as usual (7)
6. Eamon Doherty
Suffered from playing wide on the left and couldn't find space to influence the game on a tight pitch. (6)
7. Sam Shiels
Never really got involved. (6)
8. David McCallan
Should have scored with at least one of the early chances, but held the ball up well for others to join the attack. (7)
9. Danny Shipp
Another useful performance. Unlucky not to score. (7)
10.Conor McKeever
Suffered from the midfield congestion, but was finding more room to direct the game in the second half before he was withdrawn. (6)
11. Stephen Young
Bravely played despite a protective cast on a broken nose. Fought for every ball in his usual competetive manner. (6)
sub Greg O'Dowd (for McKeever)
Provided the width which had been missing, but too often ran the ball out of play. (7)
