Coleraine 2 Newry Town 1
Ulster Cup 1st Round 2nd Leg
Saturday 17 August 1996
Coleraine win 5-3 on aggregate
Poor finishing made this game closer than it should have been, but
Coleraine passed comfortably through to the 2nd round of the Ulster Cup
with their 4th consecutive victory from the start of the season.
Michael Surgeon opened the scoring with a well taken header from a
Robbie Brunton cross in the 15th minute, but misses by Surgeon, McCallan
and Doherty prevented the home side from extending their lead.
Newry then equalised from a penalty just before half time, leaving one goal in the tie
with just 45 minutes to go.
The second half was a strangely subdued affair, only bursting into life
after 20 minutes when the Newry keeper made a great save from a close-range
McCallan effort. 20 minutes from the end, substitute Johnny McIvor
ran into Sammy Shiels resulting in the departure of the top scorer for
treatment to a head wound. Coleraine sealed the victory with 3 minutes
to go, when Surgeon flashed a header against a post, and Paul Gaston scored
from the rebound for his first game of the season.
So the 100% record is maintained, but Coleraine will have to do better
to get any change out of Glenavon on Tuesday night.
- 1. Wesley Lamont
- A quiet game after the mistakes of the last couple of weeks.
(7)
- 2. Oliver McAuley
- The Super-Ol revival continues. Another good performance.
(7)
- 3. Robbie Brunton
- Good delivery from distance for Surgey's goal. Conceeded the penalty
with a rash challenge on a man running across the adge of the area.
(7)
- 4. Brendan Aspinall
- A steady game. Not much to report. (7)
- 5. Paul Gaston
- Good defensive performance and took his goal well when
forced into action as an emergency striker after Shiels'
injury. (7)
- 6. Eamon Doherty
- Yet another excellent game. Who needs Tony Gorman? (8)
- 7. Sam Shiels
- Kept busy before his injury, but was mostly ineffectual. (6)
- 8. Greg O'Dowd
- Substituted by McIvor in the second half -
not one of Greg's better days.
(6)
- 9. David McCallan
- Saw his best chance saved by the Newry keeper - needs a couple
of goals to really get his season going. (6)
- 10. Pat McAllister
- Steady but unspectacular performance. (7)
- 11. Michael Surgeon
- Man of the match. Won everything in the air, scored the first,
set up the second and was always at the heart of Coleraine's
best moments. (8)
- sub Johnny McIvor (for O'Dowd)
- Johnny seems to benefit from coming off the bench. His introduction with about
30 minutes to go lifted both the crowd and the team.
(7)
- sub Andy Ramage (for Shiels)
- Came on at a time when the game was fairly quiet, and didn't really
get involved. (6)
