Young Kings step forward

EL SEGUNDO -- The bubble boys in the Kings training camp looked like they were ready to burst over the weekend. Two victories against San Jose featured many of the players still without defined roles as the Oct. 4 season opener approaches.

Take Randy Robitaille, who played in Nashville last season. He had a goal and an assist in Saturday's 4-3 win in Las Vegas. Robitaille worked with Jozef Stumpel and Ziggy Palffy on the first unit, but he could wind up centering a line with Jaroslav Bednar and Steve Heinze.

Bednar, who drew concern after playing poorly early in camp, had an assist in Thursday's 4-0 victory in San Jose and scored a goal Saturday. Several days ago it appeared Bednar might open the season in the minors.

"He was much more comfortable than he had been and it showed in his aggressiveness," Kings coach Andy Murray said. "I think that was true of the whole team, too. As bad as we played against the Ducks (Tuesday), we played that well against San Jose."

So well that it raises questions about how the roster will shake out. There could be as many as seven forwards for the final three roster spots: In addition to Robitaille and Bednar, there is Craig Johnson, Adam Mair, Brad Chartrand, Scott Thomas and Rob Valicevic.

Thomas was a playoff hero last year. His goal started an epic comeback in a Game 5 victory against Detroit. Johnson, who missed the second half of last season with a tendon injury in his left foot, was particularly strong on defense against the Sharks.

The seldom-used Chartrand was one of the three stars of the game Saturday. Valicevic is a skill forward who also played in Nashville last season. Mair, acquired last year from Toronto for Aki Berg, came to camp in great shape. He held his own Saturday in a fight with Sharks tough guy Todd Harvey.

There also is a chance the Kings could lose one of these players in this week's waiver draft. Clubs are allowed to protect only 20 players. There is a three-day blackout period before the draft begins Tuesday. The Kings also are looking to move one of their backup goaltenders, Jamie Storr or Stephane Fiset.

Quick whistles: The Kings hoped to have back Adam Deadmarsh (left wrist) for Saturday's game, but he tweaked a groin muscle in practice and might not return until later in the week. ... Sunday, the Kings made some roster moves: Chris Schmidt, Derek Bekar, Richard Sealey and Travis Scott were assigned to Manchester of the AHL. Yanick Lehoux and Jared Aulin were sent back to their junior teams.
