Charles Barkley scored 24 points, including a key layup off a steal with nine seconds left, as the Houston Rockets dealt the Los Angeles Lakers their first exhibition loss, 116-114.

Tracy Moore scored 16 points and Hakeem Olajuwon added 14 and 10 rebounds for the Rockets (4-2).

Cedric Ceballos made 10-of-12 shots and scored 26 points and Shaquille O'Neal added 22 points and nine rebounds for Los Angeles (5-1). Nick Van Exel had 21 points and nine assists for the Lakers, who shot 57 percent (42-of-74) from the field. With the Rockets ahead 114-112, Barkley stole an inbound pass and cruised in for an easy layup and a four-point advantage.
