When I got home I put the disks of photos away and forgot about them temporarily (I was very sick). But, then they got lost. I dug this one out today, and decided to post at least these (I'll get to the skating ones later). The purpose of my trip was to go see the World Figure Skating Championships, so I spent all of my time at the rink, except for the very last day I was there when it poured rain. I couldn't bear the thought of leaving Nice without at least some photos though, so off I went in the rain to take them. So, if you're wondering why everything looks dismal and wet, it's because everything WAS dismal and wet. :)
I was going to put these all in thumbnails, but that's just way too much work. Please be patient as the page loads. Thank you.
This is a photo I took one morning off of our balcony. The hotel we stayed in was quite small, and quite old. It was one of those places you'd look at and say "It's got a lot of character". I didn't take any photos of the hotel, and now wish I had. I love the way the buildings all come to a point at the street corners. I noticed the same thing when I was in Paris (I guess it was 5 or 6 years ago now). At any rate, that's why I took the photo I think, because of how the building tapered in at the corner. Wonder what the apartment in that corner looks like on the inside?
This photo is another that I took off our balcony. I guess what I really liked about the view is the buildings. There's nothing like that around where I live. It's just all so different. Which makes sense, the two towns (Nice and here) were probably built hundreds of years apart, right? It's just so nice to be able to open up the doors and just walk out. Here if you want to do that you slide the doors aside, then slide open the screen, then walk out onto a deck, that probably needs painting...you see where I'm going with this? It's just different there.
This fountain was gorgeous in the sunlight. I actually tried to take a picture of it one sunny day on the way to the rink. That's the day I discovered that my film camera was broken. I really wanted to take the scenery shots so that I'd have them on film instead of on disk, but..such is life, right? The fountain still looks ok in the rain, but it was a lot prettier in the sun.
This photo I took because of the interesting decoration hanging between the buildings. Unfortunately it didn't turn out very well. You can just sort of see a hint of it there. It was sort of a crest that was suspended between the buildings. I believe what it said was "Vieux Nice" (I think that's what it should be to translate to Old Nice anyway). It looked a lot nicer in person...honest!
The sea there is absolutely gorgeous. The day I flew in it was perfect. The water was that gorgeous tourquoise colour, and the sand was white, etc... It looked exactly like a tropical paradise. Naturally the day I wanted to take pictures it looked like a menacing body of water. I have a postcard around here somewhere, I'll scan that in and add it at the bottom of this page, and then you'll be able to see what the beach is supposed to look like.
This is a picture of the shoreline. Once again, it looked a lot prettier when the sun was out, but it does give you an indication of how Nice is built on a hill. Actually when I was flying in, it seemed that there were quite a few mountains around, so the far end of the picture is probably built on the foothills of one of those mountains. I really wish I'd gotten out to explore more than I did. I'm going to make sure to see more of Vancouver than the arena, and the bars :)
In the centre of Nice there is a rather large park. It sits between the two sides of the street (the main street is one way, thank goodness, or I think there'd be serious traffic problems!), and goes along for quite a while. It also curves and part of it sits right across the road from the beach. Again, it looks gorgeous when the sun is out. But you can sort of tell that the gardens are gorgeous even in the rainy photos. The park is full of fountains, and pathways, and benches, etc... I'd just have loved to sit there all day and watch the people stroll by.
This is a picture of one of the gardens in the park. I'm not exactly sure what I was going for when I shot this one, it seems sort of...unfocused now that I look at it again. Maybe I was going for the gazebo in the distance there. I'm not sure. Anyway, lots of palms in Nice, and you can see the mountains in the distance if you look closely. The walkway off to the right of the photo was quite nice too, you can't see it but there were all sorts of vines growing on the white hoops that covered the pathway.
This is another fountain that I saw while I was there. The first time I saw it, it was working and it looked nice. This time...apparently it wasn't working. By this time I was feeling terrible and all I wanted to do was to go back to the hotel and go to bed. I guess I was taking pictures from here on in simply so people didn't yell at me for not having any! :) So, anyway, there's another fountain.
This is a photo of downtown. Probably taken because of the way the block of buildings came to a point at the corner there. Also, both times I've been in France I've been amazed at how people park their cars. They somehow manage to jam them into the smallest spaces imaginable. The cars in Paris when I was there were certainly a lot smaller than the ones I saw in Nice, but then I suppose that makes sense, given that there isn't much parking room, or driving room in Paris, whereas Nice has less people, and should therefore have more room for people to move about. To the right past those phone booths was a taxi stand where I caught taxis on two different occasions.
More in the park. The flowers in this section were really quite pretty. Beyond them is the fountain that is pictured up above (the one that wasn't working). On a sunny day the place is just jammed with people, walking, roller blading, sitting, talking, etc... It just looked like a great place to spend some time.
The final photo here is of this umm..sculpture? It was featured rather prominently in the park. I didn't get close enough to see if there was a plaque or something explaining it, but I figure there must be some reason as to why it's there. :) |
