PRESIDENT’S CORNER

Well the tennis season is over and done with again and the club has enjoyed some good success, and also other results where teams struggled to hold their position in their grades. But it was pleasing to see participation across all levels of the sport during the season.

It is not the players I want to talk about but those behind the success of the season. These are your Club Captains and the organising committees who have put so much work into making the season so successful and enjoyable to those who attend the Club days, play in inter club teams, or just turn up to have a hit. Without these people, players would have little enjoyment from the sport.

Three people I want to mention by name, they are Heather McLean - the Tennis Club Captain, Lee Oliver - the Junior Club Co-ordinator and Barbara Jones - the Mid Week Captain. Each of these people has really gone the extra mile to make the season such a success and on your behalf I tender my thanks for a job well done.

On the management side of the Club, we are still trying to finalise the boundaries of the house and the Club, to conclude the sale of the House. The delays have taken an enormous amount of time and compliance with the Resource Management Act is a mine-field to counter, but I am pleased to advise that we are nearing conclusion, and the last of the payments due will be made.

The continuing review of finances still point out that the Club needs to get rid of its mortgage if it is to prosper in the future, as the interest we are paying is killing all the progress being made. In this direction there will be some ideas to address this issue, which we hope will be supported by all members.

This effort will be directed at being the Club’s "Centennial Project" with the aim of having the Club freehold of debt in 1999. Is this just a dream?? JUST WATCH THIS SPACE!!!!

Well the Squash season is now under way, so best of luck to all those playing and don’t forget we need more players on the courts - so tell your friends and get them involved. Also all Club members are welcome to join the HARD CORE Super 12 Watchers in the lounge for all games on SKY. This facility is for everyone - Please come along and join us.

Email

Many members now have Email addresses, and this information is now requested on Membership Application forms. If YOU have an email address, please let me have it. There will be a Lucky Draw for a Pro-shop voucher for people who list their email addresses. Future Newsletters may be sent to those members by email!

Our Sympathy to -

Shoe Tags

All financial members have been issued with orange Shoe Tags to identify them as financial Club Members. These Tags MUST BE WORN - no exceptions. Some Juniors have said it is "un-cool" to wear them (or similar youthful expression). If Tags are not worn, the person could be asked to leave the courts.

Squash Coaching Programme

Professional Squash Coach Tony Naughton is running Coaching Programmes - Wed 22, Thu 23 & Fri 24 April, 10am-12noon, & 2pm-4pm each day. $10 per 2 hour session. You can attend just one session, or all 6. Contact Tony: 2324551, or Barry at the office

Retrieval Of Tennis Balls

Mr Stafford who lives at 43 Delhi Crescent (the dark house adjacent to the northern end of court 7), has taken me to task for indicating in the February Newsletter, that providing members knock on his door seeking permission to retrieve tennis balls, they will be returned. He says that

"NOBODY is to come onto our property to retrieve balls". Therefore, if a ball goes over his fence, the ball must be declared "lost". Mr Stafford works from home, and does not wish to be disturbed. He insists that members must not enter his property at any time. Please respect this.

Lost Property

One of the two bikes left at the Club several months ago has "disappeared" from Lost Property - hopefully collected by its rightful owner. The remaining bike is a Blazer Ferrino 18 speed. Many other items of lost property are in the old downstairs kitchen awaiting collection - mainly clothing

Bar

"Regulars" will have noticed some recent changes. We now have Speights Gold & Speights Old Dark on tap, an increased range of non-alcoholic drinks (Fresh-up, Just Juice etc), more food (Pies, Super Snacks etc), and we will soon make the Lounge more cosy by installing concertina-type doors across the room. We also plan to double our beers on tap to four, including new signage etc. Other changes are taking place behind the scenes, and the BAR IS NOW OPEN EVERY EVENING. Cheers!!

Nicholsons Johnsonville - Bounty Cards

The Club now buys its liquor supplies from Nicholsons in Johnsonville. Members are invited to obtain a "Bounty Card" when making an initial purchase at Nicholsons, then for each subsequent purchase, you accrue Bounty "points", which accumulate towards a wide range of prizes including bottles of wine, hats, shirts, bar accessories etc. Top prizes are all Panasonic products - incl televisions, bread-makers, CD players, radio cassettes. You will have to make considerable purchases to achieve these targets, but you will be reciprocating Panasonic’s sponsorship!

Gym Keys

I am still short of Gym Keys. If you have a key, and are not using the gym, please return it to the office.

Corporate Team Building

Some organisations take their management team away to exotic locations for a few days of "Team Building" or "bonding" sessions. Your Club’s Manager, Professional Coach, and Lawyer undertook its own "Team Building" programme on Heretaunga Golf Course recently, where a 3-4 times a year golfer -"its a miracle if I break 100" - took on two 11-12 handicappers who play 2-3 times a week, on their home course. Anna has an awesome swing and hits the ball "a mile", and her sister Jackie Liddell is very accurate off the tees and on the fairways. They each played just over their handicaps, and I broke 100, helped by two birdies & two pars on the back 9 for a 40. Another "bonding" session is planned!

Newsletter Sponsors

If YOU would like to get your company’s message to about 550 households in the western hills, please let me know. Cost is about $230-$250. SQUASH

"KHANDALLAH PANASONIC"

1998 Season

The Squash season for 1998 has now kicked off, with interclub having started and our first major tournament being held on the weekend of 23-25 April. So if you haven’t picked up your racket by now, its time to get going.

Fun Teams Opening Tournament

A most enjoyable fun teams tournament was held on the weekend 5-7 March. Four mixed teams of six players fought it out, with the "Beachcombers" (Dianne Bridgeman, Greg Grant, Ross Buckley, Dennis Siefe, Stirling Hakiwai & yours truly), winning the event.

Panasonic C Grade Tournament

This tournament is being held 23-25 of April. The squash committee are trying to bring about a few changes to the way tournaments have been run in the past. Key points of change are :-

We are hoping that these changes will enable players the opportunity to play that are usually unable to commit a whole weekend to a tournament.

Junior Squash - Club Days

One of the most important initiatives being undertaken at the moment is to get the Junior activity in the club more structured, and the first step to achieving that is to operate a Junior Club Day. For the last 2 or 3 weekends we have been running Club Days on Sunday mornings from 9am to 11am. If there are any Juniors wishing to join in, please come along and take part.

As a result of early interest, we entered a mixed team in the Wn Junior Interclub competition.

Club Days will be run with a total emphasis on fun, participation and non-competitive squash.

Junior Tennis Players - If you can play Tennis - you can play Squash. Come down next Sunday morning at 9am!

Don’t forget, your subs include squash as well as tennis!

Senior Club Nights

Another initiative that the Squash Committee is considering is to provide a Senior Club Night which caters for players of all levels and encourages social squash. The feeling is that this would fit best being run on a Monday night, however, the main stumbling block at the moment is finding somebody to run the evening. If YOU would like to help, please contact Barry

Panasonic B Grade Tournament

This tournament will be held over Queens Birthday Weekend and it is intended to be the club’s flagship event of the season. Everybody should keep this weekend free and take part in an event that will be great fun. We will be able to offer great prizes as a result of the very generous support from our main sponsor PANASONIC.

Whilst the event is shown as a B Grade tournament, we want players of all grades to take part, particularly club members. So when you see the entry list posted, please put your name down!

Bar Roster And Friday Night Football

The bar roster has been up and running since the beginning of April, albeit with one or two hiccups. However, we could certainly do with any additional volunteers.

With the introduction of Sky to the club there is a group of people turning up on Friday Night to watch the Super 12 rugby game of the night. We would like to invite everybody to come along and use the clubs facilities and tune into a fast growing pastime.

JUNIOR TENNIS

The end of the Junior Tennis season was celebrated with fantastic weather for the annual Parent/Child Tournament. The maximum 42 draw event was held on Sun 5 April with the Junior Club Champs awards being presented at lunch-time. (If you were not there for the awards presentation, and placed in the tournament, please collect your medal or trophy from the Pro-Shop)

Winners of the Parent/Child Tournament were Craig & Jeff Mason, Runners-up Masaki & Mike Takeda. Plate winners were Nigel & David Butler from Fraser & Warren Press, while the Consolation Plate was won by Andrew & Marvin Waiand from Chris & Warwick Eves. Congratulation to all!! We may even see some changes next year with a "novice" and "serious/advanced" division.

A big thanks to Tricia Walbridge and Nick Locke who helped to co-ordinate the tournament this year. Also many thanks to Judy Williams and Anna Callender who helped with the difficult task of handicapping and arranging the draw. To all who brought plates for the tournament, another big "thank you".

Re Junior Interclub - while tennis is still in your thoughts, if your child did not play interclub and wishes to do so next season, please let me know NOW so that I can be certain to mail a form. All previous interclub players can expect to see the enrolment form in early August. Managers - I cannot thank you enough for the effort you put in this year. With the data you have recorded, the job of making up next season’s teams will be much more accurate. Please, if you have not done so, forward the final compiled result sheet to: Helen Stevenson, 2 Glentui Grove Khandallah, or drop off to Barry

MIDWEEK TENNIS

Midweek Tennis for the 97/98 Summer Season concluded with a very successful lunch attended by 65 players. Prizes were presented by Judy Rafter, Capt. Team 1. Among those receiving awards were:

Over the last Interclub Season, Khandallah entered 15 teams involving over 70 people.

At the end of the Post Christmas Competition we had two teams who had won their grades – Judy Rafter’s team, comprising Kay Avery, Anne Barnett, Anna Newsam and Judy Williams in the Invitation Grade, and Helen Flynn’s team of Jean Cashin, Elizabeth Kennedy, Kathy Ombler and Anne McRobie in Grade 2/3. Warmest congratulations to you all!

We are looking forward to seeing our Midweek members at the Winter Tennis Mornings on Mondays and Thursdays from 9.30am to noon, beginning on April 27, then from May 18, at 10am until 12. 30pm. on the same days. (Please note that Child-Care will only be available on Thursdays)

I welcome this opportunity to sincerely thank our very hard working Committee; especially Janet Taylor, Vice Captain; Sue Steele, Secretary; June Parnell, Treasurer; Robyn Dry, Delegate to Wellington Midweek Tennis; and Dianna Wishart, Management Committee Delegate.

Their willing and vital involvement has made my role a pleasure and the Season a resounding success, thank you all again.

SENIOR TENNIS

Well the Summer days are drawing to a close and with it arrives those lovely sunny Winter days when we can still play Tennis and make good use of the facilities available to us.

The interclub season has finished with some good and some not so good results. We haven’t received the official Slazenger Regional Interclub results but I believe all of our Regional teams managed to hold their places in their grades.

In the ASB Wellington Interclub, our two Women’s teams also held their places in grades 2 and 3 coming 4th and 5th respectively. Unfortunately the Men’s grades were not quite so lucky with our grade 1 and grade 5 teams dropping a grade for next season. Not to worry though, as it gives you a challenge from the outset to get back up there again during the pre-Xmas rounds. Our Men’s grade 3 and grade 4 teams came 5th and 3rd respectively. It was a good effort by the grade 3 Women’s team, and the grade 5 Men’s team who were predominantly new interclub players or new members to the club. We hope to see you all back again next season.

The 1997/98 Club Championships were held from 11-15 February 1998. Some entries were a bit light in numbers and it was a pity not to see all our regional players enter. Results:

Congratulations to all!

It was unfortunate that we had a few defaults due to injury: Marie Baker from the Women’s Singles with a strained muscle and Nick Green having to default from all events with Tennis Elbow which of course meant that his Doubles and Mixed partners had to miss out as well. However, I believe they both came right, or right enough shall we say, in time to finish off their Interclub seasons.

After numerous phone calls the return event of the "Over The Hill" Trophy Tournament against the Martinborough Club was once again played in Martinborough, on March 15. They have a fairly small club which makes it hard for them to round up enough numbers to make the trip over to Khandallah worthwhile, so we gladly took up the opportunity to play once more on those lovely grass courts. Unfortunately the weather was not as kind to us this year, the courts had also suffered a little from the dryness, as a southerly change bringing Martinborough’s first rain in at least three months, swept down upon us at 12:30pm. Therefore, we had to abandon play and just enjoy the barbeque and socialising, despite there being one or two people a little "under the weather" from the shenanigans of the day and night before!!!

All that is left now is the closing day on Saturday April 25 1998 and we want YOU to help us make it a good one. We will be having the event wet or fine with either a fun Tennis day or Table Tennis, Darts, Pool and maybe Squash depending on the tournament finishing that day, so come prepared. The start time is scheduled for 1:30pm and everybody is welcome, Tennis players, Squash players and partners. We would especially like to see some of those interclub players come down and join in - the not so hot players don’t bite you know, and some are even quite good as well!! At about 4ish (if we haven’t started already by then) we will probably knock off for a few well deserved refreshments and some nibbles provided by your own hard working Tennis committee. Later on we will be ordering in Pizza, at $4 per person, so be prepared to stay a while and join us in seeing out the end of the 1997/98 Summer Season in style.

I would like to wish you all the best over the Winter months, but don’t forget that Tennis still goes on every Saturday from 1:30pm right through the Winter. We have entered one team in Winter Interclub - players are mainly Grade 5 Men, and Grade 3 Women.
