PRESIDENT’S REPORT

The year has opened again with the Club (with the exception of Mid Week and Juniors) facing lethargic membership interest and support for activities promoted by your playing committees. The exceptions to this are the Business House Teams events Barry is running. These are being well supported and are probably the highlight of the Club’s week apart from Mid Week and Junior activities.

The problems facing our Club and many other similar sports clubs is the level of support we receive from our Membership base in the community. Senior Membership, which is essential for the funding base for the club’s survival continues to dwindle and fall. People in the community who used to become members and enjoy the challenge of Tennis or Squash, today find it easier to drift off to the gym and pay much higher costs than become involved in a club activity. This is probably because they do not wish to become involved in a community-based organisation, and are scared of being asked to contribute to the running of activities.

The fact that we continue to have a growing imbalance between Junior Membership and the Senior Club indicates that many potential senior members regard the Club as a Baby Sitting Service and not a facility that they as a family enjoy. The effect of the decline in senior members is that once again income is falling below desired levels and we will once again be running into a cash deficit.

My message is simply this – either the community supports this club or it will surely but slowly disappear and be sold off to satisfy the short fall in cash over the next few years.

Finally I wish to note with sadness the recent death of our Number 1 Tennis Player Anthony Adams. His sudden death has deprived our Club of a great personality and dedicated competitor. The deepest sympathy of all members of the Club goes to Shona and her family at this time of their sad loss.

David Binning

Friday Night Tennis - Mums and Dads

The introduction of the new Junior Friday Night mixed doubles tennis competition has seen quite a few Mums and Dads come down to watch their children in action. I am now opening the Bar from 6.30pm/ish, to allow them to relax while doing so.

Farewell Jackie & Graeme Liddell

Long time Khandallah members Jackie & Graeme Liddell moved recently to Sydney. Jackie (nee Callender) won the Womens Club Championship singles 5 times from 1981, the Doubles 6 times (all with sister Anna), the Mixed 4 times (twice with dad Rodney, once with brother Guy, and once with husband Graeme); while Graeme won the Mens Singles twice, the doubles twice, and the mixed doubles 4 times (twice each with Jackie and Anna)

Photographs

At long last, I have completed the captions and hung the framed photographs of 1998 Senior and Midweek Tennis Opening Days, and the winning Squash Interclub team photos

Promotional Flyers

Possibly the biggest-ever direct mail promotion was undertaken late January, when 20 Juniors hand-delivered 7000+ promotional flyers to each letter-box in Ngaio, Khandallah, Raroa, Johnsonville, Woodridge, and selected parts of Newlands. These suburbs were carved up into areas, and Juniors living in those areas were approached to deliver the flyers. Many thanks to Anna Brady, Nick Brown, Ben Eckman, James Graham, Meggan Helm, Sam Hercus, Simon Lindsay, James McBride, Claire McCormack, Scott McRobie (with help from mum Anne), Zuke Marinkovich, Michael Markham, Matthew Moriarty, Nick Scott, Bridget & Emma Smith, Hayden Smith, Craig Thomas, Kate Urlich, & Leanne Williams.

These Juniors are asked to call at the office to collect some dollars for their efforts. Many thanks to you all.

We have signed up several new members as a direct result of this promotion, and also created an "awareness" of our Club throughout the community.

email

Nearly 200 members’ households are on email, which greatly simplifies the distribution of Newsletters - ie no photocopying, folding 3 times, placing in envelopes, printing labels for those envelopes. If YOU received this Newsletter by POST but have an email address, please email me at - ktsc@xtra.co.nz

Cook Strait Fishing Trip

Following the success of last years fishing expedition, 8 intrepid members set sail at an early hour for another tilt at nature, with the prospect of hauling in a relative of Jaws.

Shoulder to shoulder they stood - Geoff Robinson ("a great white took my sinker & hooks!"), Peter Ameye ("do you like my tea cosy/hat?"), Steve Falla ("I hate sharks!"), Dave Allen ("I’ve got a big one here"), his son Sam who received personal instruction on "hauling them in" and filleting from crewman Paul, Mark White (Kahawai Catcher), Dennis Siefe ("when do I take my seasick tablet? Ooops - too late"), Owen Foskett ("where’s my beer?"), his son Hayden ("you’ve finished it"), and yours truly "two at a time Baker". Mark’s "giant" kahawai was the biggest fish of the day, and Owen reeled in some nice terakihi.

A great day’s fishing, followed by a barbecue at the Club later when wives and partners came down to enjoy the catch.

Security

I can’t believe the people who play tennis in the evening, then walk out of the building leaving the door to the courts open, and the floodlights on. Do you do this at home?

Similarly, I am appalled at the last remaining members who use the bar, then walk out leaving the bar door and/or the Lounge door open. If YOU are one of the last to leave the complex, please lock up everything in sight.

The main front door should be latched open only when the office is open, for tennis club days, & for visiting interclub tennis & squash players. I have even found it open at 10 o’clock on a Saturday night

Please treat our Club’s facilities, as you would your own home.

Neighbours

I am very concerned that several neighbours have telephoned recently complaining about - people playing squash after midnight; people trespassing through private property to reach the rear of the club (thus breaking the law); young trees being damaged by trespassers, and people sneaking onto private property to retrieve tennis balls. I was telephoned today by one very irate resident who said that a junior had entered his property, climbed up a climbing vine onto the roof to retrieve tennis balls - and breaking the vine in the process. This person somehow managed to avoid being attacked by the large doberman.

Tennis balls which sail over a fence into a neighbouring property, are to be deemed "lost". Please do NOT approach the residents seeking to recover your ball.

We have many direct neighbours, and while we expect them to fair and reasonable, we must respect their right to privacy.

Business House Tennis & Squash

As noted in the November Newsletter, our first Business House Squash commenced with a full field of 8 teams. The Scots College team "Hoots Mon" (Russell Holmes) won the event, followed by IRD "Sexat" (Dave Hames), PricewaterhouseCoopers "Red Dot Squad" (Jo Brown), the two Computerland teams "Drivers" and "Servers" (Terri Grimmett) were 4th equal along with KPMG "Team Fresh" (Hayley Uttinger); & the two Ernst & Young teams "EY 4 Nicks" & "EY Hackers" (Dennis Siefe) brought were equal 7th place

The inaugural Business Tennis competition, and the second Business House Squash competitions commenced on Monday 8 February - both with a maximum of 8 teams. There are now over 50 non-members playing at our Club on Monday evenings, whereas the Bar is usually closed on Mondays as there is no one here. All these people are exposed to our excellent facilities, and are thus potential members of our Club.

Teams include three EY squash teams (Dennis), IRD 3 tennis and 1 squash team (Dave), Computerland (Terri) has one tennis and one squash team, Stu Cordue of Candle NZ has a tennis team, new club member Mark O’Dwyer has a tennis team, Richard Christensen of WestpacTrust has a new squash team, "Hoots Mon" are back, and "Barry’s Bashers" makes a re-appearance on the tennis courts after several years "bashing" at Mitchell Park.

Squash teams have a playing team of 4 persons, with three persons in each tennis team (doubles only). Team entry is $120 for the 7 rounds. The Autumn competitions are scheduled to start soon after Easter.

Thoughts from your new Life Member

Tennis at 10am - sorry, its wet. Lunch - Yes, its all indoors

I have arrived to have lunch with the Midweek Committee.

What a surprise to find so many faces from the past, arrive to join a wonderful lunch organised by the Midweek Committee.

Any excuse for a get-together has always been an important part of the Club

Tennis is such a great game and I have met up with so many people from all parts of the world at Khandallah Club I have played tennis overseas with friends made at Khandallah, in New York, Montreal, and parts of Australia, as well as many towns in NZ, and am pleased to say I still keep in touch with most of them.

Forget striving to be the best, and enjoy the fellowship and friendly rivalry you can find at your Club, as it is a great place to socialise.

Val Jarvis, Life Member

Centenary

Plans are progressing for the Club’s 100th Jubilee, to be held on Friday 12th and Saturday 13th November 1999. The most pressing need at the moment is for help completing the "History" of the Club. If anybody with a computer is able to allocate some time to help editing the material received to date, to prepare it for publication, I will be very grateful. Cr Judy Siers is no longer able to assist in this regard.

If you know of any former members, who may like to attend the centenary, please let me have their name(s), contacts etc

Millennium Function

I have successfully applied to WCC for a late licence for Fri 31 Dec 1999. Don’t plan anything at home - celebrate the new Millennium with your friends at KTSC. The more the merrier!

Cleaning

The Cleaner has given notice to terminate the Cleaning Contract. If any member is interested in taking over the cleaning, please let me know. Apologies for the lack of cleaning recently - many thanks to Roy for pitching in to do it

Please Clean Up After You

Members using the Lounge, are asked to wipe down tables, and to wash, dry & put away dishes, utensils etc. Please be conscious of the fact that other members may use the club-rooms the following morning, and should not be confronted with a mess from the night before. In order to cut costs, the Cleaners only come in once a week at present, so we need to keep the facilities clean and tidy for other members.

Tennis Balls on Squash Courts

A major "no no" is hitting tennis balls on the squash court, but it happens occasionally. Tennis balls damage the plaster on the walls, which is very expensive to repair

Mixed Doubles tennis competition

It has been suggested that we hold a Fun Mixed doubles competition for Senior members soon. If YOU would like to participate, please contact Heather on 4794188, Barbara on 4796008, Terri Grimmett 4798346, or the office on 4795015

Gym Equipment

Our gym is under-utilised, probably due to some of the equipment being in need of repair etc. We have decided to sell some of the items - the treadmill, exercycle, stepping machine, mini-tramp, and the large heavy weight machine - all "as is, where is". If you are interested, please MAKE AN OFFER.

I am hopeful that we can install a rowing machine and other items to replace the existing machines, later this year.

Visitors

I am becoming increasingly annoyed at those members who bring Visitors to the Club, but do not pay the Visitors fee. Everybody who uses our courts must pay to use them - members via subscriptions, visitors through the $5 Visitors fee ($2 for Juniors), Business House and Interclub players through team entry fees, and casuals via the casual fee.

On occasions I have spoken to members who are playing with visitors, & they often express surprise that visitors had to pay, but promised to pay when leaving. However, they rarely do so.

Visitors Envelopes are located near the telephone in the entry area. Please complete, and pass to the office - or via the "Racket Slot" in the Pro-shop door when the office is closed.

Note - Access Cards are issued INDIVIDUALLY to the financial member, and MUST NOT BE LOANED to other non-financial family members, or friends etc

Sponsorship

Christmas presents I did not enjoy receiving on Christmas Eve were letters from Panasonic and Coca Cola advising that they would not be renewing sponsorship for 1999. Panasonic was the major sponsor of Squash, and we urgently need to find support from another company. Any ideas? I have approached Pepsi to replace Coca Cola

Tournament Calendar

The pocket-sized 1999 Tournament Calendar has arrived. Copies in the box outside court 3, & in the lobby near the phone

Winter Interclub

Entry sheets are located in the lobby. Although not "set in concrete", I expect Mens to start Tue 13 Apr, and Womens Wed 14 Apr. Masters is apparently reverting to FORTNIGHTLY on Wednesdays, which means that some of you may revert to playing in both competitions. Full details expected from Wn Districts late Feb/early March. "Watch this Space" above the Booking Charts.

Squash Week ’99

Squash Development Officer - Steve Dunbar - has set up Squash Week 8-14 March. Squash will be promoted over 6 radio stations during this period, which culminates with an OPEN DAY at all Squash Clubs on Sunday 14 March. Club Captain Russell Holmes will contact various members to arrange a roster to enable potential new members to be shown through the Club, and others to ensure that there are at least two courts in action throughout the day.

The promotion also offers a "Member Get Member" deal. For every member YOU introduce to the Club, who sign up on the Open Day, you receive 10% off your annual subscription.

Different Balls for Different Grades

Squash NZ (SNZ) has issued a flyer stipulating the "Rules for Balls" for Interclub this season -

Referees Exams

Squash Wellington advises that "all Interclub players must sit the referees exam, before they play interclub this year". Examinations will be held at 4 venues within the next 2 months - dates to be advised. They suggest that to assist our players, we hold a "Rules Evening" prior to attending the District Exam.

Squash Wn will provide a nationally qualified referee to conduct a "Rules Evening" at our Club, comprising a 45 minute video, followed by a question and answer session. Sandra Tinkler is co-ordinating this exercise

Grading List on the Web

As from the April Grading List, the full NZ Grading List will be published on the SNZ Web-Site - www.squashnz.co.nz The Tournament programme will also be available shortly on the Web. More than 6500 people have visited the SNZ website

MIDWEEK TENNIS

Midweek Tennis for ‘99 got off to a fine start as the glorious Wellington Summer rolled on, and 34 players enjoyed a Fun Tournament on Opening Day.

With no end to the "golden weather" in sight, our busy calendar of events should also enjoy enthusiastic attendance.

That program is well underway now with the Handicap Tournament on February 25 the next scheduled event. Check the Notice Board at the Club if you’re interested in taking part, or give Jean Cashin (4795866 ) or Jill Haughton (4795811 ) a call. (Child minding will be available for longer times if required)

A Mini Tournament is planned for March 1 at the Renouf Centre (no Interclub that day ). If you’d like an entry form, call me (4796008) or Robyn Dry (4759856 ).

We are now into the 2nd Round of Interclub and Khandallah has 8 teams entered, including two in the Invitation Grade. Very Best of Luck To You All!

There will be three Club Mornings per week from now through until Thu 1 April – Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, 9.30 to noon, with child-care available on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Wednesday Night Tennis is also available to Midweek players from 7.00pm to 9.00pm.

Looking forward to seeing you all in the weeks ahead,

Barbara Jones

Midweek Captain 4796008

JUNIOR TENNIS

The second half of the interclub season has started for the juniors with Khandallah entering 33 teams – 17 girls & 16 boys for the Wgtn competition. We were pleased to have several of our team’s come first in their division move up a grade.

Of special note is the Regional A Teams. The boys Regional A Team consisting of Evan Kramer, Robert Foy, Hayden Gemmell, Mark Lowe, Vincent Lowe, & Sam Fogel won the competition for the Region. The girls Regional A(2) Team consisting of Monique Henderson, Leanne Williams, Katelyn White, Jess Young, & Vanessa Barnett were runner’s up for the Regional. Well done. We are also lucky to have won the Girls A grade enabling the following team to move up to Regional A: Charlotte Miller, Kate Urlich, Charlotte Evans, Hannah Dobson, Sarah Oliver, & Alice Holm. It is saying something for the Khandallah girls when we have earned the position to have three teams playing in the Girls Regional A Grade!

Thank you to all of the managers who are submitting the result sheets back to the Club either by fax or placing in the results box. These enables the Junior Recorder (Helen Stevenson) to record each player’s statistics based on who they were playing and what position. This helps us to up grade the ladder when Khandallah teams are playing one another. The Juniors have enjoyed having the ladder updated weekly.

Anna is still running Friday Club Nights. As we were not getting much participation from many of the older and more advanced players we have started a new competition. From 6:30 to 8:30 those juniors who initially expressed interest in playing mixed interclub for the City on Friday nights will have mixed doubles games organised at the Club. Fri 12 Feb was the first night for this competition and all the Juniors seemed to enjoy the format. We will be limited to 28 players as we only have the seven courts. If you are not playing and are interested please give Anna a ring on 479-1386 and be on hand as a reserve. All Juniors are welcome to come down and watch and order takeaways with the players.

The Parent/Child Tournament will be held the first weekend after we return from the Easter and School Holidays break -Sunday April 25. As in the past the draw will be limited to 42 pairs and entry will be on a first come first served basis. Conditions of entry are that the child be a financial member of the Club, under 17 years of age, and playing with a partner aged 30 or older. Entry forms will be available from the Club on March 10th. This is a great fun day for families to get together!

Junior Club Championship Awards and Trophies, as well as interclub results will be awarded following the Parent Child Tournament at 2:30. Though this may mean some players from the Tournament may finish and have to return, it will be good fun for the finals of the Parent Child Tournament to have some spectators and will enable awards for that tournament to be presented at the same time.

Juniors holding trophies from last year’s Club Champs, are asked to polish, and return them to the office

As many of you are aware I have been helping organise the Juniors for several years.

As my own children are growing out of the Junior Competition I find that I am losing touch with the younger players. The Junior Committee also has many members whose children are getting older and moving up to the Seniors. We desperately need some young, fresh blood to come in to the organisation. The framework of the Juniors is well organised and now needs someone new to man the helm. I will definitely be stepping down from this position, but will gladly help to turn the works over to another volunteer. The Juniors are the strong element and future of the Club - it would be a shame, for Khandallah and Wellington, to lose this huge membership and momentum of enthusiasm.

SENIOR TENNIS

Happy New Year to you all and I hope you all had an enjoyable and safe festive season. Here we are now into our centenary year and the last year of this century! What an exciting year ahead this is looking to be.

Starting with the events at the end of last year. The second Family Day was held on Sunday 6 December with once again a disappointing turnout. We realise that a lot of people had other things on in the busy month of December, but it doesn’t seem as if the interest is there in holding these events in the future. We are trying to think of other ways to encourage families to come along and join in some fun activities together at the club. If any of you have any good ideas, please let me know.

We had the ‘Club Captains Drinks’ night on Friday 18 December, which was a jolly affair enjoyed by all who attended. During the evening we drew the raffle for the Gourmet Christmas Hamper and the winner was Dave Hames. Thank you to all those people who bought tickets. The proceeds from the raffle will go towards the catering of our Club Championships Finals evening. We will soon be starting another raffle, this time an Easter Hamper. The tickets will once again be $2 each and available to anyone who wants to buy them. Keep your eyes out for it and this time YOU might be the lucky winner. The proceeds will once again go towards the catering for the Finals evening and the raffle will be drawn on that night, Saturday 27 March, one week before Easter.

Now for 1999. The post-Christmas round of interclub got underway on 23 January 1999 with our Regional 1 Men, Regional 2 Women and Grade 4 Women all being at the top of their grades following the pre-Christmas events. Congratulations to all participants of those teams. Let’s see if we can make this round just as prosperous.

On Saturday 13 March 1999 we are expecting both our Regional 1 Men’s and Regional 2 Women’s teams to be playing in the Regional grade FINALS at the Renouf Centre starting at 1pm. Now I know that you will all want to go along and support our top players, so we will be transferring our club day that weekend to Sunday 14 March 1999. The more support we can round up, the better our teams will play. So put this date in your diary now and join us all in cheering our teams on to VICTORY.

On a sad note, we were all very sorry to hear of Anthony Adams sudden death. Anthony was our number one player in the Regional 1 Men’s team - and Singles Club Champion. He will be greatly missed both as a player and for the person he was. All the more reason to go along and support our Men’s Regional 1 team who will be trying to win the event for Anthony.

Well, the Summer has been great so far hasn’t it and absolutely perfect Tennis weather! I have even heard rumours that some people have said it has been too hot to play tennis! Don’t forget that we still have club days every Saturday from 1:30 and Wednesday Nights from 7pm, which is sometimes the best time to play when the wind has dropped and the intense heat has gone from the day. So let’s see a few more of you venture down to join the regulars in making use of our great facilities.

The next scheduled event on the calendar is the Club Champs, scheduled for 3-7 March 1999. Entries close at 7pm on Friday 26 February so get your name down on the lists at the club. Events are of course Mens Singles, Womens Singles, Mens Doubles, Womens Doubles and Mixed Doubles. There will be plate events for the Singles only. If the entries warrant it we will have a B grade section, but until we get entry numbers, we won’t know. The entry fee is $10 for one event, $15 for two or $20 for three. You might as well make the most of it and enter the lot. We will find you a partner for the Doubles and Mixed if you don’t have one. Matches up to the semi-finals will be best of 17 games and will be played Wednesday through Friday evenings if required. Semi-finals and finals will be best of 3 set matches. The singles finals will be played on Saturday 27th March at 4pm followed by an Awards Cocktail Evening where the prizes for the champs will be presented as well as any interclub prizes/certificates. There will be finger food provided at this function free of charge (thanks to our hamper raffles - don’t forget to buy your tickets) and the bar will of course be open. You should already have this date in your diary as it was mentioned in the last newsletter, but if you haven’t, put it in there now and come along and watch the best players in our club compete for the Championship Titles and join in the function that will follow!

You may email your entry to - ktsc@xtra.co.nz - by Fri 27 Feb

We have decided to make the ‘Over the Hill’ event one that will occur every second year. Therefore there will not be a trip over to Martinborough this season. There are one or two other events that are in the planning stages for either the end of this season, mid-Winter or early next season, so keep your eyes and ears open for further details.
