Subscriptions

Many thanks to all those members who have paid their fees for 1998/99. About 130 members have not yet paid their subscriptions, and these members are asked to do so as soon as possible.

Annual Report

The 1998 Annual Report and Financial Statement was printed a few days after the Annual General Meeting, but photocopies of the draft report were available at the meeting. A few printed copies are available from the office

From Crystal Set, to Internet

When I was a very small boy, I can remember using ear-phones attached to a fine wire, and touching a "crystal" shaped irregularly like a piece of coal, about the size of a finger nail, to receive radio broadcasts. In those days (before transistors) radios were mains-powered. Crystal sets were the fore-runner of the transistor radio as we know it today. Since then, in order to communicate in business, we have used telegrams, teleprinters, telex, facsimile, and of course the telephone.

Now the latest technology is email, and the Internet, and our Club is right up there. I have created an "Address Book" which currently contains over 120 members’ email addresses.

This Newsletter is the first to be distributed by email.

If YOU have not advised me of your email address, please

email me at ktsc@xtra.co.nz

Special thanks to Thomas Larsson of Ericsson Communications, for the time he spent installing email and the Internet, & explaining how to use it.

Web Sites

Check the NZ Tennis Website - www.tennis.org.nz - for "Hot News", National Calendar, Senior Results, Junior Results, Tennis Links, National teams, NZ Player rankings, and "The Game". Email for NZ Tennis is - info@tennis.org.nz

And you can check out the Website for Squash New Zealand (formerly NZ Squash) - www.nzsquash.co.nz - where there is now a Message Board, and where you may soon find the Grading List. You can email Chief Exec David Knowles - david@nzsquash.co.nz

Thomas has also set up the Club’s "Home Page". You will soon be able to obtain information on our Club - ktsc@oocities.com

Junior Tennis

Lee Oliver does a wonderful job in co-ordinating junior tennis activities. She has encouraged parental support by gathering managers for each Junior Interclub team, and the Club conveys it’s thanks to all those Mums and Dads for their support of our junior tennis players.

Shoe Tags

Green shoe-tags confirm membership for 1998/99. However, orange shoe-tags are still current for members who joined between October 1997 and July 1998. If you see a person not wearing a coloured shoe-tag - please ask them if they are a member.

Bar Tabs

Despite the Bar Committee’s decision to discontinue Bar Tabs, some members continue to put their drinks "on tick". When you are packing your bag with racket, shoes, etc, please also throw in some dollars !!

Famous Khandallah Tennis players

Have you noticed how many Khandallah members have famous tennis names? Ken-Patrick Rafter, Thomas-Magnus Larsson, Judy-Venus Williams, Lindsay Davenport-Oliver, Philip-pousis Grimmett, Greg Redzeski-White, Barry Becker, Anna Callenkova, Lee Jansen-Oliver etc.

Microsoft Access

Is there a student out there familiar with Microsoft Access, who could design a small database? Please contact the office

Socials

About 70 members and friends had a great night on Saturday 22 August ago when we enjoyed a SPIT ROAST DINNER.

Kelly Gruar and her Social team agonised over whether or not to proceed when only 3 tickets had been sold, 8 days before the event. Kelly and her team including Heather McLean, Marie Baker, Dianna Wishart, and Lee Oliver, spent many hours on the telephone urging members to attend, and as a result of their efforts, the dinner was a great success.

Many thanks also to Barbara Jones and her Midweek members to "get behind" the social. In reality, the Midweek support ensured that the function would proceed. Many members came on their own, and had a most enjoyable evening

Rumour has it, that there may be a "Black Velvet" social soon. Please watch the Notice Boards

Friday Night Social Drinks

Now - 1st Friday of each month 6.30pm. Please join us!

Pro-shop

New season’s tennis racquets have arrived, including the state-of-the-art titanium racquets. Our prices are generally lower than "downtown" retailers, as we don’t have the same overheads. And very importantly, you can "try before you buy".

Only three of the 100+ pairs of shoes I "inherited" remain unsold - still at ½ price. I also have about 20 tracksuits from $29 (were $112). For some dearer tracksuits which were up to $199, also selected skirts, tops, shirts etc, I invite you to "make an offer".

Summer Interclub Squash

Entry sheets are located outside squash court 1. Dates -

Men - Tue 3 Nov to Tue 1 Dec, and Tue 9 Feb to Tue 9 Mar

Women: Wed 4 Nov to Wed 2 Dec, & Wed 10 Feb to Wed 10 Mar

Entries close Mon 12 October.

No Smoking

The Committee has decided on a NO SMOKING policy in the building. Kindly respect it.

Bad Language

Neighbours have reported bad language emanating from our courts on various occasions - including the squash courts which are close to houses. Members are asked to watch their language, and remain conscious of our proximity to our many neighbours

Welcome Home to the Laws

Long-time friends of mine - Marion & Doug Law - returned to Wellington recently, after diplomatic postings of 9 years in Zimbabwe and Sydney. Doug was President of the Khandallah Tennis Club at the time of amalgamation with the Khandallah Squash Club in 1984, prior to which the two clubs were separate entities. Marion was a long-serving Secretary of the Tennis Club

Doug & I were at Rongotai College together (as was our President - David Binning). We played soccer and cricket together, and with Marion, played interclub tennis (4th grade mixed!), and table tennis. Marion later went on to become Singles champion of India, and New Zealand Tennis Singles and Doubles champion. Marion & Doug have agreed to join the Committee planning the 100th jubilee

Newsletter - Sponsorship

Many thanks to Junior Convenor Lee Oliver and her business partner Gillian Press - "Hampers of Blair Street" - for sponsoring this Newsletter.

If your company would like to sponsor a Newsletter, which will reach about 550 households between Karori/Wadestown and Churton Park, please let me know. Cost is $250.

SENIOR TENNIS

Well we had a good day for our opening on Saturday 29th August 1998 with about 35 people turning up for the start of what we hope is going to be a great summer season of Tennis. A fun tournament was held prior to the official opening of the 1998/99 season by Linda Simonsen from Wellington Tennis Incorporated. Everybody had an enjoyable afternoon of Tennis and my congratulations go to Terri Grimmett who won the tournament with the highest score and Helen Johnson, John Holdsworth and Craig Mason who all tied for second place. The wind was a little breezy so we had the opening day photo inside. Keep an eye out on the walls upstairs if some space can be found!

Club days are currently being held on Saturday afternoons from 1:30pm but we are also going to give Sundays a go from 2pm during the month of October. So, the challenge is there – USE THE SUNDAY CLUB DAY OR LOSE IT! Wednesday Night Tennis will commence on October 7th 1998.

The annual Reid-Bentley Tournament is scheduled for SUNDAY OCTOBER 18 1998 so put it in your diary now and come along and join in a fun afternoon of Tennis. You never know but you might win! The way we run our fun tournaments means anybody could win!

Another date for your diary is SUNDAY 1 NOV when we have a FAMILY FUN DAY planned from 2pm with a BBQ to follow.

We are in the final process of getting the interclub teams sorted out and by the time you read this, the team lists should be out. Our entries are confirmed for the our Slazenger Regional Interclub teams, those being Men’s Regional One and Three, Women’s Regional One, Two and Three, and Regional Masters Division 2. At this stage we have requested Men’s Grades 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6, and Women’s Grades 2 and 3 in the ASB Wellington Interclub competition, but are still waiting for that to be confirmed. Unfortunately we didn’t get enough interest to enter a mixed team in the Sunday competition. The Slazenger Regional competition is scheduled to start on Saturday October 3, and the ASB Wellington competition the following weekend on October 10. The Men’s grade 6 team will play on Sundays commencing October 11 1998. It is good to see that we have some new faces keen to play interclub this year, so let’s all make a good season of it and return some good results.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank my committee for their continued support in joining me this year to help make this season a good one for you all. For those of you who don’t know who the committee are, they are: Marie Baker, Terry Cosgrove, Peter Jackson, Ken ‘Patrick’ Rafter, Calvin Wade, Gareth Williams, and Lee Oliver who has the huge task of convening the Junior club with a team of willing helpers. Thanks also to two outgoing committee members, Kelly Gruar and Nick Locke, for their support on last years committee.

Best of luck to you all for the 1998/99 season.

Heather McLean

Club Captain

JUNIOR NEWS

With the weather being so mild it is good to see so many juniors out playing tennis, and especially, using the challenge ladder. The ladder should be updated weekly so make certain your result is recorded with either Anna or Barry or is written on the challenge sheet upstairs. (The typed ladder sheets are the most up to date record.)

After many agonising hours, the junior interclub teams have been posted on the bulletin board. The manager of each team should have contacted each member by now to set up a time for a team practice. If you have not been notified please call Barry or Anna to check on which team you have been placed. The first game for the season will be October 17th & 18th.

We will then play for six weeks, excluding Labour Weekend. Managers, thank you for getting the teams organised on such short notice before the holidays! I look forward to seeing everyone at the meeting for managers on Wed 14 October 7:30pm at the Club.

Dates to remember:

December 5 & 6 Last day of interclub before Christmas

CHAMPS

February 6 Junior Interclub restarts for Term One

April 25 Tentative date for Parent Child Tourn

Those Team Managers who haven’t yet booked a practice time for their team, please contact Barry urgently. There are plenty of 3.30pm times still available, but not much else.

Keep up the good challenges and please make good use of the Friday night Club Night. We all know it is more fun when our friends are there – so it is up to each of YOU to organise a group of mates to meet down at the Club for some fun hits, table tennis, or pool. The pizza evening seemed to be a good success so let us know what else you might like - McDonald’s??

"Christmas 1998 is fast approaching, especially for hampers of Blair Street Limited, your corporate gift specialists. We have several presentations packaged in unique containers in the $30 to $50 range, which would suit a variety of occasions. For several years, Hampers of Blair Street has created, sourced, packaged, and distributed nationally, gifts for large corporations. Please give either of us a ring to set up a time to meet with you to ascertain your gift needs for this year. Obviously, the earlier you can place an order, the greater the range of goods from which you will have to choose.

We look forward to hearing from you in the near future
