STORY
David Wingate has carved out a niche for himself in the NBA as a reliable role player and steady defender. He was a member of the legendary Dunbar High School team in Baltimore that featured Muggsy Bogues, Reggie Lewis, and Reggie Williams, and he attended college at Georgetown. In his sophomore season the Hoyas won the 1984 NCAA Championship. He left college as the school's third all-time leading scorer. The Philadelphia 76ers selected Wingate in the second round of the 1986 NBA Draft. The 6-5 swingman put in two solid seasons for the Sixers, averaging a career-high 8.9 points in 1987-88. But after appearing in only 33 games in 1988-89, he was traded to the San Antonio Spurs, who kept him for two years before waiving him in 1991. Wingate hitched on with the Washington Bullets for 1991-92 and turned in his best all-around season, averaging 7.9 points while setting career highs for games played, assists and rebounds. He signed with the Charlotte Hornets as a free agent before the start of the next season and led the team in field goal percentage (.536) in 1992-93. After undergoing surgery on his knee twice in five months, Wingate began the 1993-94 season on the injured list and was limited to 50 appearances, but he started 35 of the team's final 37 games. The knee limited his effectiveness in 1994-95, and his productivity dipped significantly. Acquired by Seattle in June, 1995 along with Hersey Hawkins for Kendall Gill, Wingate played a limited role for the Sonics in 1995-96 but provided sound defense and occasional scoring when called upon. Following the 1994-95 campaign, Wingate's NBA travels continued as he was part of a Hornets trade with the Seattle SuperSonics that brought Kendall Gill back to Charlotte. He brought defense and versatility to the Sonics' bench over the next three seasons, helping them reach the NBA Finals in 1995-96. Prior to the 1998-99 season, David Wingate signed with the New York Knicks as a free agent.
