Rick Helling is another of North Dakota's own. He is currently a
starting pitcher for the Arizona Diamondbacks. Rick has also played for the Texas
Rangers and the Florida Marlins. In 1998, Rick was one of a few 20-game
winners in the Major Leagues. Go Rick!

1998 Season
Established career-highs for wins, starts, innings, strikeouts, complete
games and shutouts...tied Roger Clemens, David Cone and Tom Glavine for the
major league lead in wins (20)...tied for fourth in the AL in winning
percentage (.741) and tied for fifth in complete games (2)...became the
third 20-game winner in Rangers history...became the 12th player in major
league history to win 20 or more games with an ERA above 4.00...tied a club
record by finishing 13 games above .500...only the fifth pitcher in Rangers
history to finish 10 or more games above .500...was 6-0 with a 2.93 ERA to
start the season, the first Texas pitcher to ever win his first six
starts...lost consecutive decisions just once...Rangers were 25-8 in his 33
starts.
1997 Season
Began season with Florida ... posted 2.37 ERA in 38 relief innings for
Marlins ... traded to Texas Aug. 12, 1997 ... combined with John Wetteland
on a one-hit shutout, August 18 ... struck out 12 hitters against Toronto,
September 4 ... held hitters to .233 average overall.
Career Highlights
American Association Pitcher of the Year for Oklahoma City in 1996, going
12-4, 2.96, with 157 strikeouts ... traded from Texas to Florida on
September 3, 1996 ... posted 1.95 ERA for Marlins ... split 1995 and 1994
seasons between Texas and Oklahoma City ... had 3.29 ERA in his first six
Major League starts, 1994 ... led Texas League with 188 strikeouts, 1993,
and pitched in Texas League All- Star Game ... posted 2.29 ERA in three
starts for Class A Charlotte in 1992 ... Ricky Allen Helling was drafted by
the Rangers in the first round in 1992 ... attended Stanford University.
