Jay Buhner hits for the cycle.

SEATTLE -- It took 17 years but on June 23, 1993, Jay Buhner hit for the cycle - the first time for the Seattle Mariners.

Jay started the game with a grand slam in the first inning and helped the Mariners gain the lead of 5-1. In the third inning he hit a double to right-center, and added a single in the fifth.

Buhner then batted three more times before hitting a lead-off triple in the 14th inning. The blast went into right-center and off the wall. The A's pitcher, Shawn Hillegas, walked Tino Martinez to set up a force at second. As hoped, Greg Litton hot to the shortstop and threw to Mike Bordick at second. Jay had to stay on the bag.

With a a 2-1 count on catcher Bill Haselman, Hillegas threw a wild pitch and went under A's catcher Terry Steinbach. With that, Jay was able to coast past home plate and the Mariners won 8-7.

The 14 inning game last 4 hours and 37 minutes before a crowd of 18,645. This was also the team's second 14 inning game of the season.
