Alex hits 40 home runs and steals 40 bases!
ANAHEIM -- For only
the third time in baseball history, Alex Rodriguez has hit at least 40 home runs
and stolen 40 bases in a season. On top of that, he became the first to ever have 200 hits
in that same season.
Earlier in the season Alex became the first Mariner to join the 30/30 when he
stole two bases against New York on July 31st. Then on September 19th,
Alex went 3-for-4 while collecting not only home run number 40 but also his
200th hit of the season. The next night he would hit his 41st home run against
Oakland. That broke the record for the most for a AL shortstop in a season. Rico
Petrocelli had 40 in 1969.
With another strong showing
in 1998, it proves that his near-MVP season for the 1996 was not a fluke. Alex
has both the speed and power that makes him the best all-around star shortstops
in the Major Leagues.
