ROCHESTER, Minn. — UND’s Becky Moen (So., Morris, Minn.) scored a career-high 23 points and Mandy Arndtson (Sr., Austin, Minn.) scored a season-high 22 points to lead the Sioux women’s basketball team to an 88-60 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville in an NCAA Division II women’s basketball quarterfinal game Wednesday at the Mayo Civic Center.

With the win, UND (28-3) advanced to play Shippensburg (Pa.) (28-4) at 6 p.m. Thursday in the NCAA semifinals. Shippensburg defeated Delta State, 70-65, on Friday in the first quarterfinal game.

Against Texas A&M Kingsville (27-7), the Sioux jumped out to an 11-0 lead and held the Javelinas scoreless for the first 4:24.

“We wanted to come out and attack right away,” said UND head coach Gene Roebuck. “Our players really had the presence to push the basketball down the floor and in transition.”

Texas A&M-Kingsville went on a 10-4 run to get to within 15-10, but that was as close as the Javelinas got, as UND went on a 9-0 run to grab a 24-10 lead with 12:27 left in the half.

The Sioux led by as many as 20 in the first half, and went into halftime with a 45-29 lead.

Moen and Arndtson each had 12 points in the first half.

Moen has averaged 15.6 points in the past 11 games after averaging 6.1 points in her first 20 games. She has set or tied her single-game career scoring bests five times in those 11 games.

“My confidence is up, and I don’t second-guess my shots,” Moen said. “I feel in the flow, and things are going well right now.”

Arndtson said the large contingent of UND fans in attendance were a factor in the Sioux start.

“Right away we came out with a lot of intensity, and you could tell the crowd was behind us,” Arndtson said. “We have great fans and they cheered for us the whole game. It really gets you going and makes the game exciting.”

At the start of the second half, UND held Texas A&M-Kingsville scoreless for the first three minutes, but the Javelinas outscored the Sioux, 6-4 in the first five minutes and got within 14 points (49-35).

The Sioux then went on a 19-4 run to make the scored 68-39 with 9:50 left. Arndtson scored seven points in the run. Texas A&M-Kingsville did not seriously threaten UND after that.

Javelinas head coach Debbie Robledo said both UND’s offense and defense made the game difficult for her team.

“UND did a great job on transition offense,” Robledo said. “They were very physical and beat us hard to the boards. They disrupted and distracted our offense. We always like to establish our inside game, but because of UND, we rushed our shots. My expectations were a lot higher than the outcome. North Dakota is a step above where we are now.”

For the game, UND shot 53.4 percent from the field (31-of-58), giving the Sioux back-to-back games of better than 50 percent field goal shooting for the first time this season. UND shot 56.5 percent from the field in their previous game, a 71-56 win over Minnesota-Duluth in the region finals.

Joining Arndtson and Moen in double-figure scoring was Theresa LeCuyer (Sr., Anoka, Minn.), who scored 13 points and grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds. UND outrebounded Texas A&M-Kingsville, 51-30.

The Javelinas were led by freshman center Arie Wilson, who had 16 points and 10 rebounds.
