Grand Forks, ND – University of North Dakota women's basketball coach Gene Roebuck announced today that Shannon Baugh has been hired as UND's second assistant women's basketball coach, joining assistant coach Travis Brewster, who was hired May 8.
Baugh, a native of Davenport, Iowa, was an assistant coach at Division I Wisconsin-Green Bay last year. The Phoenix finished the 2001-02 season with a record of 24-7 and advanced to the NCAA tournament as a No. 13 seed, where they fell to No. 4-seed Texas, 60-55, in a first-round game. It was Baugh's first season with UWGB.
Baugh, 30, began her collegiate playing career at Lincoln (Ill.) Junior College. After sitting out her freshman (1989-90) season to undergo reconstructive knee surgery, Baugh earned All-Region XXIV honors during the 1990-91 season. She completed her career at Eastern Illinois University. As a senior during the 1992-93 season, Baugh served as captain for the Panthers.
Baugh graduated from EIU in August, 1994, with a degree in speech communication.
Prior to resuming her basketball career as a coach last season, Baugh spent five years as a sports photographer/reporter at WFRV-TV, a CBS affiliate in Green Bay.
"I was very impressed with how Shannon handled herself when she visited campus last month," Roebuck said. "She'll be a very good fit with our program."
In addition to her on-court coaching duties, Baugh will oversee the administrative side of the women's basketball program and assist with recruiting.
"Shannon gives our staff a knowledge of recruiting in Wisconsin and Illinois, which will be an expansion of our recruiting area," Roebuck said. "She'll do a great job in recruiting because she's a people person."
