Ray Durham has beefed up his season totals with this past week, as he now features a .299 batting average, and 91 runs scored, which currently ranks in the top 10. Along with that, Ray Durham also brings 14 homeruns, and 50 RBI's to the plate, pretty decent figures for a second baseman who hits first or second in the lineup.
Ray Durham clearly having a great season, and was rewarded for it with his appearance at the All-Star game this year. However, Ray Durham is still probably one of the most underrated second basemen in the majors, probably just behind Brett Boone.
There are really only two reasons why Ray Durham doesn't receive the popularity that other second basemen receive. First of all, his defensive play is less than stunning. He's sort of the defensive equivalent to Jose Canseco on the infield (ouch!). However, Durham is still young, and his defence looks to improve. The only other reason why Durham doesn't receive much popularity may be due to the fact that he is overshowered by the other Chicago sluggers in Albert Belle, Frank Thomas, and Robin Ventura.
