Murphy's Matt McRae leads Swain's Erik Perkins. Both reached 2 miles in 10:35. Perkins pulled away a quarter mile later to win in 16:36.1. McRae was 2nd in 17:05.0.
Perkins, a sophomore, became the second Swain runner to win a state cross-country title in the 90s. Tommy Trehern won three straight 1A/2A cross-country titles from 1990 to 1992.
