The New York Rangers chose Mattias in the second round (48th overall)
of the 1992 Entry Draft. In nine games during 1993-94, he notched two assists.
In 1994-95, he tallied three assists in nine games. On March 14, 1996,
he was traded with Nathan LaFayette, Ian Laperriere, Ray Ferraro and a
1997
fourth-round draft pick to the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for Marty
McSorley, Jari Kurri, and Shane Churla. In 1996-97, Mattias posted career-bests
with 80 games, 21 assists, and 22 points. Through the 1997-98 season, he
played in his 200th NHL game. In 1998-99, he scored two goals and added
five assists in 78 games.
From 1991-93, Mattias played 61 games for AIK of the Swedish
Elite League. In 1991-92, he scored career-bests with four goals, three
assists, and seven points. From 1993-95, he saw action in 118 games with
Binghamton of the AHL, where he scored 10 goals and 19 assists.
Mattias played for Team Sweden at the 1996 World Championships,
as well as the 1996 World Cup of Hockey. In 1997, he was a member of the
silver medal-winning Team Sweden at the World Championships. Mattias represented
Sweden again at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan.
