Bryan was Boston's 1st choice (21st overall) in the 1990 draft entry. He was traded to Pittsburgh from Boston along with Glenn Murray and Boston's third-round choice in 1996 draft entry (Boyd Kane) for Stevens and Shawn McEachern on August 2, 1995. Bryan was obtained by the Islanders in 1996. He was traded by Pittsburgh to the Islanders for Darius Kasparaitis and Andreas Johansson. He was traded to the Kings on June 20, 1999. In 82 games for the Islanders in 1998-99, he scored 16 goals and had 24 assists.
Bryan played his junior hockey with Michigan State. He was named the Spartans' MVP and Outstanding Offensive Player. Prior to Michigan State, Bryan played for the Midwestern Junior B League, Stratford Cullitons, in Ontario. He was named rookie of the year and 1st Team All League player.
 Prior to his hockey years, Bryan majored in broadcasting at Michigan State. He was the guest commentator for the Pittsburgh area high school hockey games during the 1995-1996 season
