Kolzig received his Vezina Trophy in a ceremony in between the first and second periods. Last season, he went 41-20-11 with a 2.24 goals-against average and led the Capitals to a first-place finish in the Southeast Division. However, he had arthroscopic knee surgery September 26 and will be out at least two weeks.
With Craig Billington in net for the Capitals, the Kings took advantage. Robitaille's first goal came just 96 seconds into the game to give the Kings an early lead that they never lost. He gave Los Angeles a 3-0 cushion with 9:06 left in the opening period when he beat Billington with a one-timer from the right faceoff circle.
Robitaille had a chance to record his 15th career hat trick but Billington made a pad save on his one-timer from the slot with 4:44 left in the third period.
Rookie Eric Belanger had a goal and two assists in his NHL debut and Jamie Storr turned aside 19 shots for Los Angeles, which improved to 4-1-1 in its last six trips to Washington.
