Game Story

ANAHEIM, California (Ticker) -- Zigmund Palffy scored a power-play goal 64 seconds into overtime as the Los Angeles Kings overcame a hat trick by Marty McInnis and escaped with a 5-4 victory over the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim.

All the momentum seemed to be going Anaheim's way after McInnis scored his third goal of the game with 3:20 remaining to knot it at 4-4. But rookie defenseman Niclas Havelid was penalized for high-sticking 16 seconds into overtime, giving Los Angeles a 4-on-3 power play.

The Kings worked the puck around the perimeter before defenseman Mathieu Schneider took it at the point. He immediately swept a pass into the right faceoff circle for Palffy, who ripped a one-timer past goaltender Guy Hebert for his eighth goal, tying him for the league lead with St. Louis' Scott Young.

"It's difficult in the overtime when you take that kind of a penalty," Hebert said. "But this game changes so fast. We got momentum in the third period and really had a chance to win. The penalty was just a tough break in overtime. We just can't afford a penalty in that situation."

The penalty completed a dismal night for Havelid, who posted a minus-4 rating.

"It was certainly accidental," Ducks coach Craig Hartsburg said of the infraction. "That's the way it goes sometimes."

Los Angeles snapped a four-game winless streak and won for the just the third time in its last 12 trips to Anaheim. Palffy credited the return of captain Rob Blake, who missed three games with a fractured lumbar vertebrae suffered in a 5-0 victory over Boston on October 15.

"There was a lot of pressure on us to do something," Palffy said. "It has been tough because Bobby wasn't here. Tonight, you could tell with his presence in the lineup what a difference he makes. You can't blame any one person, but you just have to perform."

Blake made an immediate impact by tying it at 1-1 with his third goal at 6:21 of the first period before assisting on Palffy's overtime tally.

"I felt good, a little shaky," Blake said. "It takes a little time to get back."

But the Kings received another scare in the second period when Blake had the wind knocked out after a hard check. He did not miss a shift.

"You can't catch your breath on the ice so you have to get off," Blake said. "I think it was important that I was able to play."

Jozef Stumpel, who was playing his second game since ending his holdout last week, gave Los Angles a 2-1 lead at 8:37 of the first period by redirecting rookie Lubomir Visnovsky's pass in the slot. But McInnis notched his second goal of the game on the power play less than three minutes later.

"Our line skated pretty well tonight," McInnis said of his unit, which includes Mike Leclerc and Matt Cullen. "We had a lot of openings, but everyone works hard to make ourselves better. We have to keep proving ourselves to get to the next level."

But a turnover in the Anaheim zone helped Los Angeles regain the lead. Ducks defenseman Pascal Trepanier was stripped of the puck by Glen Murray, who wheeled and a fired a shot into the top left corner of the net for his third goal.

Rookie Tomas Vlasak doubled the Kings' lead 9:19 into the second period with his first NHL goal.

"You've got to secure a two-goal lead," Blake said. "This would have really been discouraging to lose a game like this."

After Leclerc brought the Ducks within 4-3 with 10 1/2 mintues remaining, McInnis completed his second career hat trick with the tying tally.

Ducks defenseman Patrick Traverse had his shot stopped by goaltender Jamie Storr, but Cullen got the rebound along the end boards and threw a backhanded pass in front to Leclerc. Leclerc was stopped on consecutive shots with two defenders draped over him, but McInnis was alone in front and tapped in the rebound for his sixth goal of the season.

"You know Marty is a good player," Hartsburg said. "It's up to him to add offense to our game. He's a veteran player. The difference for him this year is that he's healthy. Last year, he wasn't."

McInnis' other hat trick came with Calgary on January 24, 1998 against Vancouver.

"This doesn't happen often," he said. "We were just talking after the second period that we had to stay with our game plan. We were able to do that and it got us back into the game in the end."

With a win or a tie, Anaheim would have set a club record for most points through the first nine games.
