Dwight Yorke hauled Manchester United back into their Champions' Leagueclash with Bayern Munich when he headed home his fourth goal of theseason.United's record signing scored his first European goal for United whenheconnected with David Beckham's cross after 29 minutes.Yorke's strike brought United level after Brazilian Giovane Elber hadfiredthe Germans ahead after 11 minutes in the Olympic Stadium.United were playing their first European match in Munich since the 1958aircrash and a minute's silence was observed before kick-off in memory ofthevictims.Bayern needed to beat United to revive their Champions' League hopesafterlosing at Brondby and they went straight on the attack.Gary Neville was forced to concede a corner in the second minute andsweeper Lothar Matthaus drove well wide as did Hasan Salihamidzic.Bayern opened the scoring after 11 minutes when Elber fired home frominside the six-yard box after a move involving himself, Carsten JanckerandSalihamidzic.Teddy Sheringham, making only his second start of the season, almostequalised when he glanced a header just wide.Phil Neville produced a vital clearing header to deny Stefan Effenberg,whowas lurking at the back post, at the expense of a corner after 17minutes.Roy Keane won a corner off Bixente Lizarazu, but Beckham's inswinger washeaded away by Effenberg.Salihamidzic then made a hash of a great opportunity when he failed to connect with the ball when it fell to him unmarked at the back post.Sheringham went close again after 23 minutes when he forced a good stopfrom Oliver Kahn after Beckham had found him just inside the area from acorner.United deservedly equalised after 29 minutes when Sheringham releasedBeckham down the right and Yorke headed home his cross from inside thesix-yard box.Bayern carved out a good opening in the 34th minute when Elber foundSalihamidzic from Thomas Strunz's deep cross, but the Bosnian's shot didnot trouble Peter Schmeichel.Beckham pressed the self-destruct button once again in the 39th minutewhena foul on Effenberg earned him a second Champions' League booking.The England midfielder will now miss United's next group match againstBrondby in Copenhagen in two weeks' time.Salihamidzic must have thought he had restored Bayern's lead three minutesbefore the interval when he received Elber's ball and turned and firedat close range at Schmeichel.But the Dane and the United defence managed to scramble the ball awayfor acorner.HT Bayern Munich 1 Manchester United 1 Bayern began the second half just as they had started the first andLizarazu fired over from outside the area after United only half-clearedEffenberg's corner.United stunned Bayern when Paul Scholes put them ahead in the 48thminute.The England midfielder collected Yorke's header and as Matthaushesitatedhe burst past Markus Babbel and into the Bayern box to score past Kahn.Bayern knew their Champions' League lives were on the line and JensJeremies unleashed a 20-yard drive at Schmeichel after 60 minutes astheytried to claw their way back.Bayern changed their front line when they took off Jancker andSalihamidzicand brought on Berkant Goktan and Ali Daei.Bayern Munich 2 Manchester United 2But Bayern hit back in the last minute when from a long throw-in intothebox Schmeichel had a rush of blood to the head.The Dane tried to climb over a ruck of players to punch clear but theballbounced past him and Elber, despite a challenge from Sheringham, lookedtohave added the final touch as the ball bobbled into the net. ?
