TONY COTTEE

They don't make them like this any more! TC joined Everton in 1988 (from West Ham) for a then record £2 million.

He served us well until 1992 when he returned to West Ham. Despite having such a high profile and so much expected of him, fame and money never went to his head. I was at Everton when Tony returned to Goodison, playing for West Ham. We are used to the likes of Paul Ince being booed when returning to his old West Ham , but, amazingly, TC had a standing ovation!! He is much loved by fans and pundits alike. When he left West Ham to go to play in Malaysia, a cult soccer TV programme here built an ALTAR to him and he used to phone in regularly!

Now, of course, back in England ("rescued" by Martin O'Neill) he has recently passed the 200 league goals in the top flight mark - and nobody deserved that more than him! When I wrote to him for this photograph, it was for one for my friend in Canada - but of course, he sent me one as well. And, he still does a scrap-book!!! Good on ya, Tone!

(Update: 1st Feb 2000) Leicester are doing well in the cups this season - and Tone has another chance to go to Wembley yet again in the Worthington Cup Final!! He's been in Wembley finals several times - but that winner's medal is still elusive.

SO, GOOD LUCK TONY!!

(27th February)

Highly recommended not only for Everton and West Ham fans - but for ALL football fans!!

COTTEE IS A WINNER AFTER 17-YEAR WAIT

There was no more popular recipient of a Worthington Cup winners’ medal at Wembley on Sunday afternoon than veteran striker Tony Cottee, who had finally got his hands on some silverware after 17 years of trying.
Cottee, 34, had cried 12 months ago when City lost in the Worthington Final to Spurs in extra-time, perhaps fearing he would never get another chance of winning a major trophy.

But Matt Elliott’s two headed goals against Tranmere meant Cottee was at last able to climb the 39 Wembley steps as a winner.

“I’m ecstatic – I’ve waited a long time for this,” said the popular forward, who became Britain’s first £2million striker when he joined Everton from West Ham way back in 1988.

“It was all about winning against Tranmere and the lads have performed fantastically. Now we’ve got Europe to look forward to and I want to keep playing as long as I can. Matt did the business. He is a great finisher and not just a big centre-half.”

Cottee’s career in England appeared over when he went to play in Malaysia for Selangor three years ago. His family failed to settle in the Far East but even when Leicester offered him a return ticket to England, Cottee couldn’t get in the first-team and was farmed out to Birmingham City on loan.

The last 18 months have seen a dramatic change in fortune though as Cottee and Emile Heskey have formed a dangerous strike partnership.

Cottee, who had been runner-up in four finals before was a winner. “It’s been well worth the wait,” he said. “Now to Europe.”

Ah, I'm thrilled for you Tone!

THANKS to the Leicester City website for the "moving" picture of Tony! I am so sorry - I know it's against all ethics - but I just had to have it! If you want me to take it off, I will of course - but I am a HUGE fan, really I am!
