Heat 12

Original broadcast date: 30th July 1986

Teams

New South Wales: Hawkesbury
Victoria: Wodonga
Queensland: Maroochydore
South Australia: Mount Gambier

Referee: Tiffany Lamb

Event 1: Heckle and Jeckle

Victoria (4)
New South Wales (2)

Event 2: Ski Slalom

Joker: New South Wales
Heat 1: New South Wales vs. Victoria
Heat 2: Queensland vs. South Australia
Final: New South Wales (8) (Joker win) vs. Queensland (2)

Apparently Hawkesbury captain Michael Jordan practiced for this event using a surfski on a dam, and this paid off with a Joker Win. Maroochydore captain Jim 'slickback' Walsh performed admirably and almost beat Jordan to the post.

Event 3: Jaunty Jallopies

Joker: Victoria
South Australia (4)
Victoria (4) (Joker 2nd place)

We can't believe Wodonga's Leigh Privett and Rosalie Shingles lost this event, but to their credit they came second to the strong Mount Gambier team.

Event 4: Dairymaid Derby

Heat 1: Queensland vs. Victoria
Heat 2: New South Wales vs. South Australia
Final: New South Wales (4) vs. Queensland (2)

This event is seriously dangerous.

Event 5: Frogs

Joker: South Australia
Number of frogs across pond (in 1:30):
Victoria: 7 (3)
South Australia: 7 (6) (Joker equal 1st)
Queensland: 5
New South Wales: 4

In nail-biting (and possibly bone-breaking) running of 'Frogs', one of IAK's most popular events, Wodonga and Mount Gambier drew level. Wodonga's Leigh Privett showed his dexterity on pontoons while wearing flippers.

Event 6: Mountain Climbing

Joker: Queensland
South Australia (4)
Queensland (4) (Joker 2nd place)

Mount Gambier's Les Knaggs led well from the front to take this difficult steep-wall event.

Final Score

Hawkesbury: 14
Wodonga: 11
Maroochydore: 8 (required a 3rd place or better to reach semi-final)
Mount Gambier: 14
