Trevor Linden will be playing for Team Canada at this year's 1998 International Ice Hockey Federation's annual tournament, in which teams may select players from NHL teams who did not make the playoffs, or who were eliminated in the first round. As the New York Islanders did not make the playoffs, he was eligible, and former Vancouver Canucks President and GM Pat Quinn selected him as a team member. Interestingly, both Mark Messier and Wayne Gretzky, both of whom did not make the playoffs, chose not to go, saying they needed the rest.
Trevor will be joined by personal friend from their time in Vancouver, Martin Gelinas (the Canucks' 1996-97 MVP), Canucks' assistant coach Glen Hanlon, as well as:
Coaches
The team plans to play an exhibition game in Prague of the Czech Republic before moving on to Zurich. With only 18 of a possible 23 roster spots filled, the remaining positions will be used up with players eliminated in the first round of the NHL playoffs and/or National Team members.
Another option open to the coaching staff would be to use National Team members in the early tournament games, replacing them with NHL players as the tournament progresses. Once a player has been replaced however, he cannot be used again.
As has become a spring custom, TSN and RDS will televise the World Hockey Championship, beginning with Canada's game against Slovakia on Saturday, May 9th at 10 AM ET/7 AM PT.

He received a very warm welcome, as the crowd gave a substantiated cheer when he took to the ice during the pre-game warmup. Following the national anthems, attention was directed towards "Orca Vision" (the large tv screens on the score board), and a very moving video montage of hilights from Trevor's career in Vancouver was shown to the music of a Green Day song. This culminated in all 8 sides of the scoreboard flashing "THANKS, TREVOR!!" in large letters, as the crowd stood and gave him a standing ovation for 2 minutes, while the Canucks stood banging their sticks on the boards in salute to Trevor. Trevor got up, and saluted and applauded the crowd, and they eventually stopped cheering. Trevor was, unfortunately, a non-factor during the game, as he had been matched up against Mark Messier, Pavel Bure & co. However, the crowd did not forget to boo Messier everytime he touched the puck! (way to go, Canuck fans!!! :) ) Check out more info in the articles section.(Or go here) and here.
Trevor seems to know something the rest of the league doesn't know... he's about the only guy who can figure out Hasek. Trevor continues to dominate the Dominator. Ever since the Olympics in Nagano, where Trevor scored Team Canada's only goal in a 2-1 loss to the Czech Republic in the gold medal game qualifying match, He has scored on 3 of his last 4 shots against Dominek, who until the game against the Islanders had played 144 minutes of shutout hockey! Trevor scored 2 goals 36 seconds apart in the end of the first period, as the Islanders stopped the Sabre's 13 game unbeaten streak with a 4-2 win.
