Trevor in NY

Trevor Linden will be playing for Team Canada at this year's 1998 International Ice Hockey Federation's annual tournament, in which teams may select players from NHL teams who did not make the playoffs, or who were eliminated in the first round. As the New York Islanders did not make the playoffs, he was eligible, and former Vancouver Canucks President and GM Pat Quinn selected him as a team member. Interestingly, both Mark Messier and Wayne Gretzky, both of whom did not make the playoffs, chose not to go, saying they needed the rest.

Trevor will be joined by personal friend from their time in Vancouver, Martin Gelinas (the Canucks' 1996-97 MVP), Canucks' assistant coach Glen Hanlon, as well as:

  • Cory Cross (Tampa Bay Lightning)
  • Bryan McCabe (Vancouver Canucks)
  • Travis Green (Anaheim Mighty Ducks)
  • Keith Primeau (Carolina Hurricanes)
  • Rob Zamuner (Tampa Bay Lightning)
  • Martin Gelinas (Carolina Hurricanes)
  • Felix Potvin (Toronto Maple Leafs) (goaltender)
  • Jeff Hackett (Chicago Blackhawks) (goaltender)
  • Christian Bronsard (National team) (goaltender)
  • Ed Jovanavski (Florida Panthers)
  • Gord Murphy (Florida Panthers)
  • James Patrick (Calgary Flames)
  • Todd Bertuzzi (Vancouver Canucks)
  • Eric Daze (Chicago Blackhawks)
  • Nelson Emmerson (Carolina Hurricanes)
  • Steve Rucchin (Anaheim Mighty Ducks)
  • Ray Whitney (Florida Panthers)

    Coaches
  • Andy Murray
  • Mike Johnston
  • Dean Holden (Lethbridge Pronghorns)
  • Glen Hanlon (Vancouver Canucks)

The team plans to play an exhibition game in Prague of the Czech Republic before moving on to Zurich. With only 18 of a possible 23 roster spots filled, the remaining positions will be used up with players eliminated in the first round of the NHL playoffs and/or National Team members.

Another option open to the coaching staff would be to use National Team members in the early tournament games, replacing them with NHL players as the tournament progresses. Once a player has been replaced however, he cannot be used again.

As has become a spring custom, TSN and RDS will televise the World Hockey Championship, beginning with Canada's game against Slovakia on Saturday, May 9th at 10 AM ET/7 AM PT.

Trevor made his debut in Vancouver as an Islander on Wednesday, March 25. He received a very warm welcome, as the crowd gave a substantiated cheer when he took to the ice during the pre-game warmup. Following the national anthems, attention was directed towards "Orca Vision" (the large tv screens on the score board), and a very moving video montage of hilights from Trevor's career in Vancouver was shown to the music of a Green Day song. This culminated in all 8 sides of the scoreboard flashing "THANKS, TREVOR!!" in large letters, as the crowd stood and gave him a standing ovation for 2 minutes, while the Canucks stood banging their sticks on the boards in salute to Trevor. Trevor got up, and saluted and applauded the crowd, and they eventually stopped cheering. Trevor was, unfortunately, a non-factor during the game, as he had been matched up against Mark Messier, Pavel Bure & co. However, the crowd did not forget to boo Messier everytime he touched the puck! (way to go, Canuck fans!!! :) ) Check out more info in the articles section.(Or go here) and here.

The Islanders stormed into Edmonton on Monday, March 23, and and took home a 3-1 victory. It was their first win in 7 games since former GM took over coaching duties. Trevor was the first star, scoring 2 goals late in the game, also ending a 6 game scoreless drought. I will be putting up a video clip soon. Stay tuned!

Trevor seems to know something the rest of the league doesn't know... he's about the only guy who can figure out Hasek. Trevor continues to dominate the Dominator. Ever since the Olympics in Nagano, where Trevor scored Team Canada's only goal in a 2-1 loss to the Czech Republic in the gold medal game qualifying match, He has scored on 3 of his last 4 shots against Dominek, who until the game against the Islanders had played 144 minutes of shutout hockey! Trevor scored 2 goals 36 seconds apart in the end of the first period, as the Islanders stopped the Sabre's 13 game unbeaten streak with a 4-2 win.

See a video clip of Trevor's second goal on Hasek. (March 07, 1998). The clips is about 480 KB, and should take between 3 to 8 minutes to download.

Trevor Linden was named Team Captain of the New York Islanders recently. Bryan McCabe had been the captain, prior to Linden's arrival when McCabe was traded to the Vancouver Canucks along with Todd Bertuzzi for Trevor.

Trevor Linden will be wearing number 32 for the Islanders, as his previous number, 16, which he has worn for 10 years with the Canucks, was already in use by Zigmund Palffy.

    Go back home.
