3rd Round
Interview with Goran Ivanisevic
2-6, 7-5, 6-3
QUESTION: Goran, you had the big serve. It
doesn't
work. What goes through your head?
IVANISEVIC: Well, I didn't lost the
match because of
that. I should win easy two sets. He didn't have any chance. I
play better from the back. I play better -- from whatever he did,
I play better, and at just important points and I had to break him
or I had to do something, I didn't do it.
QUESTION: Do you think what's costing you is little
mental mistakes or lapses or what do you think it is?
IVANISEVIC: Maybe I had two lapses
two games. Maybe two badly played games in the second set on my serve.
I lost first service game on love, and then I broke him back. I had a chance
to break him at 4-3 and to go 5-3 up. It was close games. And then at 5-4,
0-30 at 15-30 I had easy second serve. I had to do
more with that. 5-5 pretty bad game. 6-5 I had a break point. He came in
on easy shot for me and I wanted to hit back so hard and I missed it. And
in the second set, you know, twice I lost my serve. Twice I had the game
point and I had two double faults. But against him, you know, you have
to risk sometimes because he's
returning so well. And it's better to serve wide, long than in the net
so I know the rhythm is there. When I hit in the net, then I know that
I'm forcing too much and something is not there. But first two sets I served
great and then a couple of bad games, which I wanted to force too much,
and I didn't have to because I
was serving so smoothly.
QUESTION: Goran, can you tell us a little bit
about the
way Agassi is playing now and the way he's been improving from a
while back?
IVANISEVIC: Agassi's always tough.
Even if he doesn't
play well, you know, he's tough, but he hits the ball okay. I don't think
he's hitting the ball like he hit in '92 or '93, but maybe I'm wrong, but
he hits the ball well. He still moves me around, and today I could run
and hit with him, but when you're
not able to run well, then you're going because he's putting the ball so
deep and finding the corners very well, so if you can't run, you can't
hit the winners all the time, you know.
QUESTION: He's one of the few guys, though,
who can get
your serve back.
IVANISEVIC: He's picking my serve very
well. He's going
for one side, and then he's putting pressure on me also because I know
he's going to one side, and most of the time he's guessing right. And when
he guesses right, then you're in trouble. Then the ball comes so fast back
that it's just scary, you know. You have to do something.
QUESTION: You were having troubles finding
motivation
after Wimbledon. Did you feel differently today?
IVANISEVIC: Today I felt okay on the
court. I felt
happy. I felt fun to play. It was nice. It was a little humid,
but conditions were good, good crowd, and I felt okay to play. It
was a good match, and I mean I'm sad because I should win that
match easy in two sets and I let him into the match. I let him
win, and that's what pisses me off.
QUESTION: What are your feelings about playing
here in
Toronto at York University?
IVANISEVIC: I mean it doesn't matter
where I play. When
you play good, you're good. But the conditions are well here. It suits
my game well. The balls are flying. You can hit a lot of aces, the points
are getting quickly done. So that's kind of what I like.
QUESTION: How did the delays affect you or did
they
affect you at all?
IVANISEVIC: This is nothing compared to Wimbledon. So I'm used
to that. This is part of tennis. You have to be prepared for anything.
