Davis Cup Interview
Pat Rafter Sep. 13, 97 in Washington DC
The Davis Cup tie against the USA, how difficult is it going to be for you to mentally stay up for the tie?
Rafter: I taken four or five days off but to get up for a Davis Cup match is not difficult.
You have often said that the Davis Cup match you played against Cedric Pioline in Sydney in the first round was important to your turnaround. Talk about that again.
Rafter: I think it was because the guys (Newcombe Roche and the team) actually did have a lot of confidence in me that I didn't have in myself. To play for your country, you feel, if you lose it's different. If your playing a tournament you're losing for yourself. I was playing for my country and I felt like I had so much to give. I had to give out more that I'd ever given out for myself personally. I guess I found something that I hadn't found before within myself and it carried me though....the guts and fighting hard. After the win, I had confidence.
