Why you need Salvation - the story of humans and God You have probably heard people say “you have to be saved to go to Heaven,” or “you have to accept Jesus to be saved,” but perhaps no one has explained to you WHY. After all, what does “saved” mean? And what do you need to be saved from? Why Jesus? Questions like that are natural, and should be asked. It is important to learn as much as you can before making any big decision. This one is no different. Our condition Long ago God made man in His own image. This means we have traits like His: a freewill, a conscience, the ability to love. God made a garden for the first man to live in and take care of. God named this man Adam. He gave Adam power over all the animals and plants. Everything in the garden was beautiful, and Adam had a close relationship with God. Then God made Adam a female companion called Eve so he would not be alone. Among the trees in the garden were the tree of life, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Adam and Eve could eat from the tree of life. It let them live forever. But eating from the tree of good and evil would make them aware, and allow them to sin (i.e. disobey God). God HAD to put the tree of good and evil in the garden to give them the choice! God wanted Adam and Eve to WANT to obey Him, and CHOOSE to not eat it. Otherwise, they could not have a freewill. But Satan, who took the form of the serpent, lied to Eve and persuaded her to eat it anyway. Adam ate the fruit as well. From that moment on, their “eyes were opened” and they began to sin. Our relationship with God was now broken. God kicked them out of the garden for their own good. This was so Adam and Eve did not eat from the tree of life again, and live forever apart from God. Now they needed forgiveness. Every person born would automatically have a sinful nature, and therefore would sin. Why? Because they would be descendents of those who had a sinful nature. You did not earn it, but you have it. It is impossible for any human to not sin. The Problem God cannot allow anything sinful into Heaven. He is perfect. Heaven is perfect. Sinful things are not perfect, and cannot enter. He cannot mix dirty water with clean. He cannot put new shoes on old feet. Heaven cannot be paradise with sin present. You sin many times everyday. You can sin just by having thoughts contrary to God's. It is that simple. For example, have you every lied? Have you ever hated someone? Have you ever taken the Lord's name in vain? Have you ever coveted what someone else has? Have you ever lusted after another person (even in your mind)? Then you have sinned. Just one sin is enough to separate you from God forever. God does not allow any person who is not forgiven into Heaven. Your sin must be accounted for. It must be forgiven first. There is no way around it. You can do good things all your life, give all your money to charity, and you still cannot enter Heaven on your own. Simply put: you cannot do it on your own. The key: You are stuck. You cannot forgive yourself of your sin. God has to make you clean. You need God to forgive you. The Solution: Jesus God knew what to do. Someone else would have to voluntarily pay the penalty for you. That person would have to be perfect and sinless. That person would have to die in your place. That person would have to set you free. That person was Jesus. Jesus has always existed, and is God. You see, God took on human form and was born as a perfect person...as Jesus. This allowed Jesus to die in our place, as a perfectly sinless person. Jesus unlocked the door to God that Adam and Eve had closed. No one else could do it. So God became a man. Sound strange? Hard to believe? It is, until you really understand it. Understanding is the key. God became a man, called Jesus, for only one reason: to die in your place. That is why you need Jesus. Without Him, you cannot get into Heaven. How you receive Jesus Jesus is easy to receive. You simply have to trust Him and put your faith in Him. You reach out and take hold of what He did for you. Choose to believe. Give up the fight. You cannot do it on your own. Jesus can fill that emptiness in your heart. You only have to ask Jesus to save you. Everyone who asks in faith is saved. There is literally no time to waste.
