The Corriente is a small, agile, athletic animal with stamina, heavy horns and a gentle disposition. These characteristics make it an ideal animal for team roping and bulldogging. When mature, a Corriente cow ranges from 700-800 pounds; bulls weigh up to 1,000 pounds. A calf generally weighs 40-50 pounds at birth.
Corrientes are small, trim cattle, with sufficient bone and strength for easy action and endurance. The cattle are narrow with high withers and a short, peaked rump. A high bushy tail switch and pronounced mane are notable characteristics. They have a clean dewlap, deep girth, high flank and are extremely cow-hocked.

Corriente Cows
Conception rates range upward from 95% in most herds, with similar weaning rates. Calving problems are nearly non-existent. Heifers usually have their first calves as 2-year olds and do not require any special care or assistance, and have excellent breed back ability. The cows are careful and protective mothers. Cows have neat, tight, trouble-free udders with small to moderate teats, and produce rich milk.
Corriente Steers
Corriente steers used for team roping, steer tripping, bulldogging, and team penning are consistent performers and learn their roles quickly and willingly. They need only a short, gentle training period for either event, and are much less likely to “sour” than other breeds. Initial training and treating the cattle carefully will prolong their performance and usefulness in the arena. Many of our steers are roped for for two seasons.

Corriente Bulls
Corriente bulls mature quickly and have sired offspring as early
as one year of age. Some breeders use yearling bulls on as many as
20-25 females. Mature bulls can be used on as many as 50 head of
cows. Our bulls generally reach a weight of 1,000 to 1,100 pounds
when mature.

Corriente History
Corriente cattle can be traced to the first cattle brought to the new world by Christopher Columbus and the Spanish. Corriente cattle are also known for their hardiness. Corriente cattle were brought to the West Indies and south Florida, as well as Central and South America, where they were bred for milk, meat and for use as draft animals. In the early 1800s, European and other breeds of cattle were brought to this continent. Within 100 years, pure descendants of the original Spanish cattle had almost disappeared as many ranchers in the America began to breed with modern cattle. The Corriente differs from the common cattle raised today for size and weight in its conformation, behavior and hardiness-- they have remained untainted by a cattle industry which has affected many domestic animals for beef consumption.
