Dave's Corner (Editors Comments):

It has taken me a few weeks to write this column.  We played our last games for Coach Heim and Coach Harry L. over the memorial day weekend. It was a terrific tournament, and the boys played great. My only regret was that we couldn't bring home the 1st place trophy for Coach Heim and Coach Harry. I and all the parents and children of CR Dynamo will be for ever grateful for the tremendous effort they put forth in creating the team, and for their warmth, generosity and genuine love of the children. I  hope each child and parent gets a chance to express their thanks to the three of them at the pool party set for this weekend (more info to come).

We played two good games against the Northern and Southern New York State Champions in Columbia. Good enough to win, but hardly our finest soccer. We saved that for the New Jersey Knights, and Baltimore Select. The New Jersey Knights were an excellent team, and extremely well coached. The game was played in the pouring rain, and under very slippery conditions. Each and every ball was hotly contested, and each team deeply wanted to play in the semi finals. The game was extremely physical, a number of players on both sides were injured (thankfully none seriously). I have never seen the boys so motivated to play. The boys always have fun together, and I am sure part of their motivation was that they got to stay in a hotel together one more night. It would be great if we could figure out exactly what generated their determination, but even Big Dave has yet to figure that one out. Zach B. wasn't really tested against the Knights because of great defense, however, on Monday morning Zach was consistently in the hot seat. He definitely earned those big dollars we pay him against Baltimore. It was fitting that the first goal scored against the Knights was from Taylor, a former player of the predecessor to the Knights. Wild Bill delivered goal number two.

Monday's game was a terrific contest. Weather conditions and field conditions were greatly improved. The boys played Baltimore Select, for the fourth time. In our last two outings, Baltimore not only won, but certainly dominated play. That was not the case on this day. While Baltimore scored first in the last part of the first half, we scored early in the second half to tie the score. The rest of the game featured both offensive players pressuring for that one goal. In the last two minutes of play, a cross and a defensive breakdown put a lone striker against Zach B., and the wining goal was scored. Zach B. snuffed at least three one on one plays against him, and played the best game of his career, but it wasn't quite enough. He should be congratulated as the player of the game. Unlike, the early New York games, the defense did not panic when the ball was inside the 18. They handled the pressure, and passed the ball out rather the simply clear the ball. The offense also showed that they could hold the ball under pressure, make runs, and change the field of play. The result was that the semi final game was best game Baltimore had the entire tournament, and certainly the only contested game Baltimore played.  Either team could have won, and while we did not win, we certainly proved we could play with any of the nations best. Montclair was soundly defeated by Ohio 3-0, and Ohio was soundly defeated by Baltimore 3-0. Ohio was a State Champion, and Montclair a State Champion. I think that says a great deal about where we are in the region. While Phila. Soccer did not fair well, and did not come out of their bracket, we wish them well in the Regional Competition. We hope they bring back a Championship for Pennsylvania, and remind them not to get to comfortable as we intend to win the States next year, and travel on to the Regionals.

Obviously, we have new coaching for the team. We all decided to try out for this new Premier Team, and therefore, we can not now look back. Nothing stays the same forever, and we look forward to giving Mr. Bayon our best. All the boys are together, and we have some new faces, hopefully, the only change will be that we are a stronger and more talented team. Again, we need to give the new coach our total cooperation, and a bit of time to get to know the boys and parents. Regardless, of our position prior to this point, we need to unite now, and move on. That does not mean, we need to forget either Coach Heim or Coach Harry's contributions. I did not update the page for a couple of weeks, as I needn't time to reflect on my own desire to continue this page. After careful reflection and a bit of prodding, I will try to keep this web page going. I certainly intend to keep it much less serious in the future. I need a little resume about the new players, and pictures of the missing team members. I am going to keep the existing team photo until we have a new photo to replace it. You can send your articles by email, or regular mail. Dave's Corner will remain a fun place.

Columbia Tournament Scores

The Dallas Cup was recently played. The teams came from all over the world in our age group. Belfast, Ireland has a team, Mexico had several teams, and South American had at least one team. The team that eventually won was from Mexico. The team they beat CASL Red Caps from North Carolina. This is the same team that won in Virginia Beach Columbus Day. The other teams we are familiar with playing in this most prestigious tournament were Baltimore Select, Steamers from Georgia, and Montclair and Knights from New Jersey. We hope to scrimmage with the Knights this weekend. Montclair played tough and lost to a semi-finalist (South American Team). Baltimore Select also played well and made the semi-finals. The Knights went 1-1-1. For more details see the link below.

Dallas Cup Scores

The Jefferson Cup was held recently in Virginia. Participating were some area teams (SuperNova and Downingtown), and teams we have played in past tournaments (Baltimore Select, FC Beach, Hartford, Richmond Strikers). A full summary of scores can be found on the following link http://www.strikersonline.com/ftourney.html. Baltimore won in the finals, beating SuperNova 5-1.

This column is not intended to be very deep so switching gears...

Thanks see you on the sidelines!
