Rangers TargetsTommy Moller-Nielsen
Tommy Moller-Nielsen
Rangers have appointed Dane Tommy Moller-Nielsen as first team coach at Ibrox. Moller-Nielsen is the son of the former Danish international manager Richard Moller-Nielsen. The 34 year old Dane was a player in Denmark with Odense ad FC Copenhagen. Later he coached with the Faroe Islands and Odense. He said, "this is the culmination of a 15-year dream for me because I've been following Rangers all that time. I can't wait to work with Rangers. It will be a very difficult job because Rangers have been so successful in recent years."
Walter Smith said, "Tommy was recommended to me some time ago. Davie Dodds indicated to me that he wished to leave at the end of the season and I didn't see any point in bringing in someone else from Scotland. I felt we need a European influence."
Former Denmark coach Richard Moller-Nielsen has spoken about his son's appointment as coach at Ibrox. He said, "Tommy is not me, he has his own style and it is a new exciting one. I'm very proud of him and glad he's joined Rangers, because I have a lot of time for Walter Smith. I don't think he should be compared with me because he is a younger coach. He has new training methods and I'm very confident in his ability. Football is developing all the time. You always need to move forward and I think Tommy can be very successful in his career, maybe even better than his father."
Moller-Nielsen added, "I have the greatest respect for Walter. He has always made me feel very welcome when I came to Ibrox and he's a fine coach. I have a real soft spot for the club and and I hope Tommy can bring a new spirit to them so they can perform better in the Champions League. That is the one area which has always disappointed and surprised me about Rangers. I understand Walter's reason for wanting a foreign coach."
